KINEVA - Computer vision as a central pillar of modern industrial automation In order for machines to not only see, but also hear and be automatically controlled, continuous improvements in model quality and the maintenance of billions of datasets are required. 𝐎𝐮𝐫 𝐟𝐨𝐜𝐮𝐬 𝐢𝐬 𝐨𝐧 𝐊𝐈𝐍𝐄𝐕𝐀. KINEVA is not just a model, but a platform. In combination with our specially tailored hardware modules, it offers a comprehensive 360-degree solution for industrial applications. At the same time, we place particular emphasis on the highest energy efficiency—both in the training of models and in their execution on edge devices, which are capable of running such models in real time. Our vision: All KINEVA models are now open source. With the release of vision Model 1, we are introducing the first model in this series. The models are developed and trained on our own REBOTNIX supercomputer in europe. By the end of 2025, we plan to develop a total of more then 50 models. In the video, I demonstrate how our first pre-trained model compares to other models like YOLOv8 and YOLO11. The focus is not on the model architectures themselves but on showing what can be achieved with pre-trained models and how we can give back to the community, just as we have benefited from the developments of YOLO3, 4, 5, 7 up to YOLO11, and now KINEVA. The inference source code has already been released. The training code as well as an implementation in Ultralytics and the corresponding model architecture are also in the works. Cobot solution of the week. 🦾 This top-notch collaborative robot implementation comes to you from COBO4YOU in France. It's been installed as part of a timing belt pulley manufacturing process. 👉 What I like about this one is that it's a perfect example of a cobot performing multiple steps in a CNC process. 𝗗𝗶𝘀𝗰𝗶𝗽𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗲 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗠𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗼𝗿𝘀𝗵𝗶𝗽: 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗞𝗲𝘆𝘀 𝘁𝗼 𝗘𝗻𝗴𝗶𝗻𝗲𝗲𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗦𝘂𝗰𝗰𝗲𝘀𝘀 Early on, as a manufacturing engineer, my ambition was very high, and my resources were very few. The production team needed a way to determine the status of individual computers that were downloading software, burning in the hardware, and rebooting often during the process. Operators plugged monitors into the computers in each process cycle to check their status. Depending on the computer's state, determining the status became a guessing game more often than not. My project was an automation of this process such that the existing conveyor and network equipment could still be used while increasing the throughput. The solution involved using the computer's BIOS and EPROM to run a monitoring program that stayed active through the computers' power cycling and output signals to an indicator dongle via the printer port, indicating fail, in-process, and passed with red, yellow, and green LED. As the project champion, I also played the roles of manufacturing engineer, project manager, and accountant. The company gave me time to work on the project but no assigned team. The challenge was exhausting, and more than once, I was ready to throw in the towel. At one point, I needed assistance from an electrical engineer, Robert, and secured his help by offering co-authorship of a patent for the dongle and program. This patent came with a bonus from our company. He joined the project, yet for me, the project's scope and the time required had ballooned. Our Production Manager, Joe Nelson, was a mentor because I considered him approachable, experienced, and successful. One day, while working on a project, I stopped Joe with a question. I said, "Hi, Joe. May I ask you a question unrelated to our work?" Joe said, "Sure, what is it?" "Well, you are successful, and your wife is a doctor, which I also consider a very respectable career; what would you say is the top thing that led you or her to this place in life?" He said, "If I were to summarize it in one word, that word would be discipline." That is one of the few tidbits of advice I've taken to heart. While before my conversation, I may have let go of the project as a failure. With discipline, I planned my resources more carefully and realistically. Most importantly, I kept working on the plan. We completed the project successfully. Discipline can transform challenges into opportunities for innovation and success. Before that, mentorship is a crucial resource that can guide you through complex projects and career growth. In order to measure image chromatic distortion between 1/8 and ½ a pixel, we needed to measure image features one order of magnitude smaller: We achieved 0,01 to 0,03 pixel ... In order to prove the amount of bias in an image, we used image compression as a metric: 4 bias sources added together amount to 1/3 of lost image compression. One third of the compressed image file is bias. In order to show how bad telemetry was, we showed how image scale accuracy could be made more accurate, 10e-5 to 10e-10 m scale accuracy improvement, 5 digits more, by removing one single bias source, there are 3 more at least. In doing so, the image center moves 3 pixels, and the aim shifts... We can prove our approach retains true object geometry, its imposed in the math formulation we use. Our approach leads to the only missing knowledge in #digitalimaging: How to model a zooming lens. ISO (International Standard Organization) identified this very specific gap in technology as THE missing factor slowing adoption of what is already the second most deployed digital technology after the microchip. Agile applied in Manufacturing – When done right A mid-sized factory specialising in consumer electronics was facing increasing production demands and high labor costs. The management aimed to improve its quality control (QC) processes by automating defect detection with software. Initially, the plan was to build a new QC system over 18 months. But with mounting pressures, they decided to take a different approach. The traditional approach was too slow. They needed faster results to keep up with production demands and reduce labor costs. What if Agile could help speed up the process and still deliver high-quality results? They made the bold decision to adopt Agile. The team shifted to working in 3-week sprints, focusing on high-impact features and collaborating closely with QC operators to gather immediate feedback. In the first sprint, they built a basic dashboard to log defects and track production line data in real time. This MVP replaced paper logs and gave operators instant access to data trends, streamlining reporting tasks and providing early insights into defect patterns. As they continued with Agile sprints, the team added automated visual defect detection on the production line. Each sprint brought incremental improvements based on operator feedback, ensuring real-world functionality and accuracy. In just 6 months, the factory launched a fully automated QC system—6 months ahead of schedule! Manufacturing Automation – the Metrics In Automation, the only metric that matters is TOTAL PRODUCTIVITY! -- Payloads, strokes, reaction times, pixel count, scan rates and other specifications at the device or module level make for great Marketing Hype and Comparison with the competition ... especially if TRUE! On the other hand, automation singularly focuses on FRICTION REDUCTION and the resulting productivity increase that produces in the process. Friction reduction may come from: - Rearranging the furniture to shorten and optimize workflows - Shorten information flows - Increased worker skills and better tools - Semi-Automation - Full Automation Some mix of all is usually required, especially in SME processes which may not have been thought through or are haphazardly thrown together until they work. -- "Where’s the beef? Perhaps still too early to tell but the SURGE in ROBOT DEPLOYMENTS in US manufacturing, particularly in the Fabricated Metals industries, has not resulted in an increase in productivity and has instead resulted in an acceleration in the DECREASE of REAL PRODUCTIVITY from 2020 through 2023. Both companies have collaborated on a prototype that has integrated a foundation model for robot grasping skills with the Intrinsic platform. Leveraging NVIDIA Isaac Sim, this robot grasping skill was trained entirely with synthetic data in a virtual environment. This workflow eliminates the need for hard-coding grippers to grasp objects in a specific manner.
