I'm presenting on GenAI tomorrow for some of my UCB Medical Affairs colleagues. What better way to explain the layers of the AI ecosystem than with analogy to French cooking? Had to share. Enjoy! 🍳 Machine Learning: The cooking technique (sauteing, braising, roasting) to prepare the dish. 📜 Neural Networks: The recipe (many steps and ingredients that need to be combined in a specific order to create a delicious dish) 🍽 Deep Learning: A multi-course meal where each course builds upon the previous one to create a comprehensive dining experience. Involves multiple layers to achieve a refined final result. 👩‍🍳 Generative AI: The chef creating new recipes. This chef creates new, innovative recipes from scratch based upon how he/she has learned patterns in cooking. 🍶 Foundation Models: Like French sauces (bechamel, hollandaise), they form the basis for many dishes and can be fine-tuned for specific tasks. 🍅 🥕 🥒 🍆 Large Language Models: A well-stocked pantry with a variety of ingredients. Trained on vast amounts of data to generalize well. 🍚 Small Language Models: A specific ingredient for one specific purpose. While the versatility is not there it is highly optimized and effective at a narrow range of tasks/applications.

🧩 OpenAI’s Foray into Real-Time Search: Innovation, Differentiation, or Just a Gimmick? At first glance, it might seem like a powerful step forward: an AI model that can pull real-time information from the web. But does this addition really change the game? Let's analyse this claim more closely: A. Minor Differentiation, or Just a Gimmick? Michael Porter’s differentiation strategy tells us that a competitive edge means creating unique value that resonates with customers and is hard to imitate. AI-powered search isn’t new. Microsoft, Google, and others have already integrated AI into their search engines. Adding a direct web search access to ChatGPT 4.o doesn’t necessarily revolutionize the platform; it might enhance user experience slightly, but it doesn’t tackle the core needs of traditional search engine users. For those already loyal to Google or Bing, is this enough to make them switch? B. Is OpenAI Quietly Admitting AI’s Limitations? This move could be a tacit acknowledgment that generative AI’s static knowledge base has inherent limitations. By adding real-time search, OpenAI might be signaling that ChatGPT’s responses alone often fall short of complete or accurate answers. Without real-time data, can ChatGPT effectively meet evolving user expectations? If this integration is about plugging gaps, it’s a subtle admission that AI alone struggles to handle all types of information needs. C. Dependency on Established Search Engines OpenAI's search feature uses a combination of its own ChatGPT-4.o model and @Bing search engine results. This dependency on Microsoft’s infrastructure suggests that ChatGPT isn’t fully self-sufficient when it comes to real-time data. Without traditional search engines, even advanced AI models like ChatGPT are left scrambling for reliable, current information. Is this really a step forward, or just another layer of reliance? D. Strategic Positioning or Missed Opportunity? Clayton Christensen’s disruptive innovation theory argues that true disruption comes from creating solutions for unmet needs, not just by improving existing ones. OpenAI’s integration of search doesn’t substantially alter its business model—it’s still focused on subscriptions, and this feature doesn’t address a new, unmet need. It’s an incremental enhancement, not a transformative shift. While it might retain or engage existing users, does it create a strong enough differentiator to drive new user conversions (e.g. Search Engines Users) or claim meaningful market share? E. Questions To Consider: Is OpenAI’s move a strategic leap, or a fundamental weakness? Starting in early April 2024, the campaign is a funding proposal for doctors or scientists who have observed cases of repurposing, in other words, the potential reuse of generic drugs (beyond their licensed uses). The debate between centralization and decentralization often overshadows what truly drives organizational success: well-defined and efficient processes. 1. Processes Drive Consistency and Efficiency - Regardless of whether decision-making authority is centralized (top-down) or decentralized (distributed), processes ensure tasks are performed consistently. - Well-defined workflows reduce ambiguity, improve efficiency, and set clear expectations, allowing teams to focus on execution rather than navigating confusion. 2. Accountability and Clarity are Built Through Processes - Processes define roles, responsibilities, and accountability—elements that transcend centralization or decentralization. - Even in decentralized organizations, standardized processes ensure everyone works toward the same goals without creating silos. 3. Customer Outcomes are Process-Dependent - The end customer does not care whether a company is centralized or decentralized. They care about receiving quality products and services on time. - Processes ensure that customer interactions, problem resolution, and product delivery happen smoothly, regardless of the internal structure. 4. Adaptability Comes From Processes, Not Structure - Centralized organizations can feel rigid, and decentralized ones can struggle with alignment. However, flexible processes allow both models to adapt quickly to changes in the market or technology. - Processes act as the backbone, providing the necessary guardrails while enabling teams to innovate and adapt. 5. Processes Resolve Common Pitfalls - Centralization Challenges: Risk of bottlenecks at the top. We learn and create by living with the world around us. Today, AI challenges us to advance boldly while preserving what matters most. Sitting here processing last night's Æthos x Villa Albertine, the French Institute for Culture and Education event at CIC (Cambridge Innovation Center) and honestly? My head is still spinning. Panels can often miss the engagement mark. This one was the exception. Frédérique Horn opened up the evening well. While we've all been watching #NotreDame rise from the ashes these past five years, something quietly revolutionary was happening. Sure, master craftspeople were doing their thing (artisans, engineers, artists), but behind the scenes, AI was analyzing centuries of historical data to guide their hands (https://lnkd.in/eGFZuwaQ). The result? Not just a restored cathedral, but also a perfect digital twin! Antonio Torralba from MIT Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence Laboratory (CSAIL) said what might've been my favorite quote about art of the night: "When you see efforts around heritage conservation, it's all about the objects. There's very little about the people... but that's changing.” I couldn’t agree more! The numbers can often make eyes glaze over, but these are actually impressive: $9 billion in cultural heritage projects last year. The European Commission threw in another €4 million specifically for digital heritage. Carré said another thing that resonated: "When photography first emerged, people questioned if pressing a button could be considered art. Today, no one questions the artistry of great photographers." Feels exactly like what we're going through with AI right now, doesn't it? Huge thanks to Jean Arnaud and Sam Rowe for bringing these minds together tonight. 4 years 📅 after the designation of the first Notified Body in France under the Medical Device Regulation (GMED), AFNOR Certification has just obtained the status of Notified Body in the scope of the European Regulation 2017/745. 👉 France now has 2 NBs for Medical Devices. This is important news for Medical Device Manufacturers facing growing backlogs and delays when applying for regulatory approval in Europe.
