"We are desperately concerned for our journalists in Gaza, who are increasingly unable to feed themselves and their families. For many months, these independent journalists have been the world’s eyes and ears on the ground in Gaza. They are now facing the same dire circumstances as those they are covering. Journalists endure many deprivations and hardships in warzones. We are deeply alarmed that the threat of starvation is now one of them. We once again urge the Israeli authorities to allow journalists in and out of Gaza. It is essential that adequate food supplies reach the people there." -- Joint statement on Gaza from AFP, The Associated Press, BBC News and Reuters News Agency

"Getting out of the car, I was overwhelmed by this inhospitable environment. The infernal heat, the sand whipping our faces, the wind strong enough to knock the horns off oxen.” said Eléonore Sens, Deputy at the Dakar office. In April 2025, an AFP team travelled there and produced a series of stories on "the camel cavalry facing down the jihadist threat," on Oualata, "an ancient town and its manuscripts facing the ravages of the Sahara”, as well as a general article explaining the country's security situation. They share their experiences, and the lasting impressions left on them. ⬇️ Link to the story below.

🔎 AFP Head of Digital Investigation for Asia-Pacific Daniel Funke and Asia-Pacific Regional Training Manager Sophia Xu conducted a three-day workshop on digital investigation techniques in Singapore, supported by RSIS | S. Rajaratnam School of International Studies, from July 8-10, 2025.   Twenty-four journalists and researchers from 12 media outlets and research centres, participated in hands-on exercises and local case studies to sharpen their digital newsgathering and verification skills. The intensive workshop covered searching on social media, finding the origin of a photo or video, geolocating visuals to verify their authenticity, vetting and obtaining user-generated content, and investigating deepfakes.   Calvin Oh, journalist at Channel NewsAsia (CNA), said he found the training “very useful and relevant” to his day-to-day work. "A bulk of what my team and I do is working with UGC content, and at times we need to verify what we are working with. The techniques taught during the workshop will definitely come in handy,” he said. Aqil Hamzah, journalist at The Straits Times, said the geolocation and AI detection skills were useful and interesting. “Having a hands-on experience to play around with the tools was the most useful part for me,” he said. Gwen Lee Geng Wei 李庚洧, journalist at Lianhe Zaobao 联合早报, added: “The skills and tools taught is highly applicable to journalists and can be applied immediately in the newsroom.”
