Scheduled for Aug 20, 2025 2:00 PM ET

Hosted by John Das Galloway, and Elysia Segal

Join us for a behind-the-scenes (and under the water) tour of NASA's Neutral Buoyancy Lab to discover how physics and engineering can help to prepare for spaceflight! The ASTRO LIVE team will be on-location at NASA's Neutral Buoyancy Laboratory in Houston, Texas to see actual astronauts training for future space walks at the ISS. Of specific interest,.. during the event, the NBL will follow the darkness/light cycle of the ISS as it goes into the shadow of the earth roughly half of each orbit, as the training progresses and our team explores the facility.

NASAs Neutral Buoyancy Laboratory (NBL) is a 6.2-million-gallon indoor pool designed to help simulate the weightlessness of space, here on Earth! Used primarily to train astronauts preparing for spacewalks, the NBL allows crews to rehearse complex activities and mission procedures around full-scale mockups of the International Space Station. Engineers and scientists also use the facility to test hardware and develop techniques for working in extreme environments.

The event is produced by Kevin Michael Reed, hosted and co-produced by John Das Galloway, founder of the Kerbal Space Academy, and Elysia Segal of Intrepid Museum.

It was kind of funny seeing Das think through "okay, so how do I clip a lavalier mic to a liquid cooling garment?"
