Over her 10-year tenure as AMD’s CEO, Lisa Su has successfully steered the chipmaker’s mission to diversify beyond the PC microprocessor and into crucial areas like gaming and high-performance computing. But right now, the data center AI chip fight is what counts. Here, there’s no doubt that Nvidia is winning, with a market share above 90%, but second place could still prove highly lucrative. AMD’s first-gen Instinct MI300 chip racked up over $1 billion in sales in Q2, and Su’s company, which saw $22.7 billion in revenue last year, hopes to make a lot more with its expanding lineup. AMD even bought an AI company—Finland’s Silo—this year, to give it the edge it needs in its efforts to challenge Nvidia.
