Joe Tsai is trying to set Alibaba, China’s e-commerce giant, back on the path to growth. Tsai, a longtime confidant of founder Jack Ma, became Alibaba chairman in September 2023 following a tough few years for the company, facing regulatory scrutiny and increased competition from new players like PDD Holdings. Under Tsai, Alibaba paused plans to restructure the company and shook up the leadership of its core retail division. Tsai also chairs the board of the South China Morning Post, Hong Kong’s leading English-language newspaper, which was purchased by Alibaba in 2015. With his wife, Clara Wu Tsai, Tsai also owns the NBA’s Brooklyn Nets and the WNBA’s New York Liberty, which won that league’s championship in 2024.
