There aren’t many players that have the resources to train cutting-edge generative AI models—and in the U.S., the only non–Big Tech companies still in the game are OpenAI and Anthropic. Siblings Dario and Daniela Amodei founded the “AI safety and research” firm in 2021 after quitting their senior positions at OpenAI, reportedly leaving because they believed the company had changed direction after taking an investment from Microsoft. Since then, Anthropic has taken $4 billion from Amazon and $2 billion from Google. Now the Amodeis and their team are reportedly looking for fresh funding at a $40 billion valuation. Anthropic’s Claude chatbot is these days seen as very competitive with rivals from OpenAI and Google, and the company recently stepped up that competition with a push into AI offerings for enterprises.
