Martin Senderovitz presented our paper, "Unveiling the Dynamics of Sustainable Entrepreneurship - An Inside-Out and Outside-In Perspective on Drivers, Challenges, and Future Directions." at the NCSB 2024 conference at Turku School of Economics at the University of Turku 🌱🌍 This research, co-authored by Sylvia Rohlfer, Simon Jebsen, and REDOUANE BAKRIM, delves into the factors that both drive and hinder sustainable entrepreneurship in emerging and developed markets. We take a unique two-pronged approach, examining both individual motivations (inside-out) and external influences (outside-in). 🔍🔍 Our findings highlight the importance of collaboration, networks and the need for changes in management education to better support sustainable ventures. 🚀 Alex Alterskye, PhD, Ted Fuller and I are happy to share our lastest publication #openaccess in Scandinavian Journal of Management - An International Journal. Our article “Field dynamics and fields of entrepreneurial practice: Autonomizing process, self-help doxa, and homological action” employs Bourdieu’s theory of practice to investigate entrepreneurship in two UK cities: Liverpool and Kingston upon Hull (Hull). By adopting an abductive approach, we shed light on shared practical understandings and multi-practitioner entrepreneurial activities. ✒️ Highlights Understanding of entrepreneurship and context can be developed using practice and field theory. The nexus of practices and multiple-practitioner entrepreneurial activity can be further understood using the field concept. A field of entrepreneurship is strengthened through the perceived availability of social capital which facilitates an autonomizing process. A self-help doxa, or presupposition of doing things a certain way influences positive entrepreneurial outcomes in the field. A field of entrepreneurship that is narrow in scope, prompts homological activity from agents facilitating further entrepreneurial activity. Overlapping fields of activity can strengthen entrepreneurial fields of activity. Great energy among our new students! We had the traditional fuksidinner (“freshman dinner”) yesterday. Industrial management at Aalto is all about the community and people—students, faculty, staff, alumni, and the broader society. We have a strong shared identity, and we want to improve the world. Some key lessons from the dinner:  1. Empathy: care about other people and their feelings; don’t be arrogant 2. Support and collaboration: work together to learn, seize opportunities, and address important challenges 3. Logic and rigor: take an analytical approach to make sense of things and create a better solution 4. Integrate well-being into daily and management practices: don’t conclude a dinner with drinks, but a shared walk back to the campus / student housing Looking forward to another fantastic semester with excellent students and great colleagues! This study aims to investigate the roles of these factors in facilitating the Business Recovery (BR) of Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) in the post-COVID-19 era, with a particular focus on the food service sector. Data for this investigation was gathered through surveys and subsequently subjected to analysis using Maximum Likelihood - Structural Equation Model (SEM) estimation. The results indicate that Strategic Flexibility (SF) mediates the relationship between CEM and BR, while the mediation of EE to BR by SF was not confirmed. The study underscores the crucial role of CEM as a fundamental capability that supports SF, thereby expediting BR. Additionally, this research confirms the interplay between the Conservation of Resource Theory and the Broaden-and-Build (B&B) theory in the formation of a company's Dynamic Capabilities, which ultimately determine its performance. Limitations of this study include a restricted observation period at a single point in time, a lack of sample diversity, and the possibility of subjective responses from respondents during the questionnaire completion process. It will particularly focus on the role of the leader and his/her team in shaping innovation streams, building ambidextrous organizations, and in leading punctuated organizational changes. Professor Tushman will introduce the notion of ambidextrous organizations; firms that can simultaneously exploit their existing strategy and explore into new spaces. Such ambidextrous organizations require leaders who embrace inconsistency in their firm and in their senior teams. He will illustrate these ideas in a range of cases, across a range of industries, dealing with digital and open innovation challenges as well as sustainability. Norwegian Business School PhD Funding The doctoral programme leads to a PhD degree and is a four-year full-time study programme, including 25% teaching responsibilities.  There are no tuition fees in the PhD programme at BI. However, in order to have an application to the PhD programme at BI considered, you need to have funding. It is not possible to self-fund a PhD at BI. There are three different ways of funding your PhD at BI Open scholarship (funded by BI) These scholarships are announced once a year, from September. The scholarships are open which means that your PhD will not be linked to a specific project but must fit it under one of the six specialisations offered by BI. A member of the academic faculty must share you research interests to be able to supervise you. A supervisor will be appointed for you if you are admitted to the programme.  PhD candidates will have their daily workplace and shared office at BI Norwegian Business School in Oslo, Norway. Scholarship positions are announced online under vacant positions. All applications are electronic. If there are no scholarships published on the page in the previous link, there are currently no available scholarships. Scholarship linked to a research project These scholarships are announced from time to time. Your PhD research and dissertation will have to be closely linked to the research project. You are usually not required to find a supervisor before applying. You are encouraged to contact the faculty involved in the project if you are interested in applying. Each project will belong to one of the six specialisations at BI. In some cases the project can be linked to more than one specialisation. PhD candidates will have their place of work at BI Norwegian Business School in Oslo, Norway. Available PhD scholarship positions linked to research projects are announced online under vacant positions. Industrial PhD An industrial PhD is a doctoral degree that is carried out in cooperation between BI and business and industry. If you are considering this kind of PhD and have funding and confirmation from your employer please contact [email protected] for further information. An industrial PhD has the same requirements for educational background for admission and is also considered a full-time programme. BI and the employer enter into an agreement regarding time spent at BI and time spent at the employer in addition to financial issues. Grant Awarding I have been awarded a grant from Alfred Kordelinin säätiö to continue my research on sustainable consumption and pricing decisions using machine learning methods. This funding will be instrumental in advancing my work on developing a machine-learning approach within the Finnish marketing domain, particularly for pricing decision-makers. I believe this research will lead to more significant results from our department at Åbo Akademi University in the Finnish sales market under the supervision of Anna-Greta Nyström. 🌍 Education and Learning for Sustainable Futures 🌱 We are pleased to share with you the publication of our new book, Education and Learning for Sustainable Futures. This book explores fundamental questions about how the role of education has evolved over the decades since the pivotal 1972 Stockholm Conference, which brought environmental learning to the forefront of global awareness.   My co-authors and I have attempted to find some answers by tracking through the decades (1970-2020) the development of narratives, thinking, and practice of #learning and #education in support of the #environment and #sustainability. What is clear is that the profile and presence of learning and education for the environment has been elevated in today’s policy discourses and communities of practice. Yet, our analysis identified some clear differences in the way education and learning for the environment has been approached over time.    In our new book, we trace these changes over the decades while looking ahead to the challenges and opportunities of the future. A key wildcard in this journey is Artificial Intelligence (#AI), which holds immense potential to bridge digital and green agendas, enabling smarter environmental management and driving innovation toward a sustainable future.
