This week in 1937, The Sphere was giving readers advice about Lloyd Triestino running a ferry service between Piraeus and Cyprus:
There are fortnightly sailings, boats leaving the Piraeus on Wednesday and arriving at Cyprus on Saturday.
There is also a weekly service of Greek boats which leave Piraeus every Thursday.
The Italian boats are very small but comfortable. If you decide to go by the Greek line, we strongly advise you to write to Cook’s or the American Express in Athens before your arrival, and ask them to reserve a cabin for you, as the Greek local lines have a habit of booking a berth two or three times over, though this would be less likely on the Cyprus route.
It is also advisable to ask for de luxe accommodation this is not very expensive. There is no doubt you would prefer the Italian boats, but it may not be possible for you to arrange your time-table to catch the fortnightly boat.
The Grande Bretagne is the best hotel at which to stay in Athens.
