If we are headed for exceeding 1.5 degrees of global warming , with 2.7 degrees the current trend target, and the actions of the COP's not reducing overall emissions , then the importance of the UK's National Adaptation Programme to Climate Change (NAP3) becomes even more important. Yet the review of the current programme by the Climate Change Committee in March this year , said that it a) falls short of what we need b) the current approach is not working c) an urgent review of NAP 3 is needed now Its worth a read .. we do need to prepare ourselves better - and sooner .. https://lnkd.in/eTB9krCE

You probably didn't notice but October 1st was the launch date of the newest public institution in the UK – the 'National Energy System Operator' (NESO). The NESO replaces National Grid and is mandated with the simple task of ... "delivering electricity decarbonisation and whole energy system planning to deliver Net-Zero." This is a great initiative that has been many years in the making with cross party support. We need whole of system thinking and the NESO will have strategic oversight of both the electricity and gas systems. The first task is to take our electricity grid to net zero by 2030 which NESO say can be achieved. The role of local authorities in progressing the transition to net zero can't be underplayed. LAs have a convening role, a leadership role, an enabling role, etc. and through these roles they can develop key projects (e.g. Local Area Energy Plans, community energy schemes development), engage with key partners (e.g. for asset based finance schemes for domestic decarbonisation), raise awareness and understanding of citizens and residents in low carbon options (e.g. carbon literacy programmes through to domestic use of heat pumps). Behind this is a core group of LA staff committed to keeping progress happening despite very, very tight budgets and increasingly contested funding. One way of us learning from each LA, we need an agreed and open assessment scheme, and Climate Emergency UK run such a scheme and they are looking for volunteers to deliver the 2025 set. 🌍 The Future of Climate Risk Reporting As climate-related reporting regulations ramp up, it's not just crucial but required for organisations to adopt climate-based reporting. This move not only boosts financial transparency but also aligns with global standards and attracts international capital. Good for the environment and good for business! Effective climate risk disclosures ensure climate impacts are central to business decisions and provide accountability for mitigating environmental risks. CSIRO's work in this space highlights how design-led approaches can improve climate risk reporting. Using Generative AI to assess these claims is a fantastic use case, and their pilot project offers innovative ways to enhance report integrity. This isn't just about tech—it's about understanding the complex systems we operate in, from economics and politics to society and nature. Digital Village was fortunate to assist in exploring these relationships through the facilitation of a Warm Data Lab, ensuring these AI systems are designed responsibly with all stakeholders in mind. "Potential new smart data scheme to drive innovation and support consumers in the energy market" says Michael Shanks, Minister for Energy Another part of the future consumer energy landscape arrives with this new call for evidence relating to a Consumer Smart Energy Open Data model comparable with Open Banking. It is an area I worked on extensively at PA Consulting and now as Coylenergy ltd. In my work I engage on the building blocks emerging across data access, consent, sharing, flexibility frameworks and more to consider the new consumer energy technical foundation to combine with technology provider innovation in tariffs, technology and business models. It is interesting this is published today when the Prime Minister launches the AI Opportunities Action Plan at https://lnkd.in/e4vmQ4N8. Video and pre-order options: https://lnkd.in/ghpfBj4h I have a modest proposal — since this is an Irish crowd, I can use that term — for how the EU could save a lot of money to put toward electrical transmission and the energy transformation: stop wasting time on hydrogen for energy. I compare and contrast with China, which has electrified all its transportation extensively with electricity and no hydrogen. They’ve barely implemented hydrogen. They have 600,000 electric buses, about a million electric trucks, and 46,000 kilometers of electrified high-speed rail. There’s no hydrogen to speak of—fewer than 10,000 hydrogen vehicles in the entire country. Stop wasting time and money on it. The EU has already wasted 25 years on that dead end. China also has the most electrified heavy industry in the world, and once again, no hydrogen. BASF just commissioned a plant in Shanghai, one of their big integrated chemical plants. It’s producing a sixth of the emissions because it’s electrified. Those emissions will decrease further as China’s electricity grid decarbonizes. Stop wasting money on the dead end of hydrogen for energy. We need to focus on fixing hydrogen as an industrial feedstock, but Europe is wasting enormous resources on it as an energy solution. The second point is carbon capture and sequestration. Europe is proposing 19,000 kilometers of CO2 pipelines for waste. Instead, electrify and don’t emit—it’s much cheaper. Europe is wasting a lot of time, energy, and proposing to spend an enormous amount of money on two dead ends that won’t move the climate needle. Free up the resources from these areas and allocate them more effectively. #climateaction #winning #solutions

💡Learn more about how grid interconnectivity is making a big difference for renewable energy. 🇩🇰 💚 🇬🇧 the Viking Link of 765km is linking 1.4GW of electricity across the North Sea, at a cost of approx. US$ 2bn. Great to catch up with the Taskforce on Nature-related Financial Disclosures (TNFD) team last week (Cathrine Armour & Barbara Sanderson) at both the 👉 #RBEU 👉 Cambridge Institute for Sustainability Leadership (CISL) CSO forum. We discussed the various methodologies used in Earth Blox to solve #TNFD Data Deluge. There is no 'lack of data'. The opposite is true. Companies are facing a mountain of data types when it comes to reporting under the Taskforce on Nature-related Financial Disclosures (TNFD). With a plethora of datasets available, selecting the right ones for the right use cases can be overwhelming. There are methods which involve using multiple data sources that complement each other, painting a more comprehensive picture of a company's nature-related risks and opportunities. By leveraging various datasets, companies can strengthen their TNFD disclosures in a few ways: 👉 Reduced Bias: Dependence on a single dataset can lead to skewed results. Convergence reduces bias and fosters a more holistic view. 👉 Increased Credibility: Combining data sources strengthens the credibility of your reporting. 👉 Improved Actionability: Different datasets can reveal hidden patterns and insights, leading to more targeted actions. Remember, the TNFD framework is still evolving. A convergence approach allows companies to adapt to future requirements while ensuring robust reporting from the get-go.
