Achieving a Milestone: The Full-Size FDM Wheelchair Cushion with #VariableDensity #NeoFoamProgress by NeoFoam Our journey through FDM experimentation has now reached a pivotal moment with the creation of a full-size (380x420x95mm) wheelchair cushion, incorporating an embedded pressure map. This development marks a significant step forward in our quest to innovate wheelchair comfort and functionality. The Cushion’s Features: • Positioning Capability & Pre-Contouring: Shapes the seating surface and adjusts the distribution of seated pressure for enhanced stability. • Firmness Zoning: Integrates multiple zones of varying structural density to optimize load distribution. • Heat and Water Vapor Dissipation: Facilitates air, heat, and moisture transfer away from the user, ensuring comfort. • Segmentation: Divides the material into 3D segments to minimize internal tension. • Stability: Provides essential lateral and forward stability. • Off-loading: Strategically redistributes pressure to minimize the risk of tissue injury. • Anti-Shear Design: A synergy of immersion, stability, and a low-friction surface guards against soft tissue damage from sliding forces. This cushion embodies everything a perfect wheelchair cushion should offer. Yet, as with any innovation, there are areas for improvement: • Surface Comfort: Despite achieving a soft structure through closely spaced gyroid walls, the top surface doesn’t quite match the comfort of traditional memory foam. Direct contact may feel less pleasant. *Solution: We’re exploring a fantastic approach to address this, details of which will be shared soon. • Pressure Distribution: While FDM foam presents many advantages, the pressure relief offered by enclosed air cells remains superior. *Solution: We’re considering blending various digital additive manufacturing technologies within a single cushion. This venture into uncharted territory is not just about creating a wheelchair cushion but redefining what’s possible in modern digital foam manufacturing #neofoam.
