Conclusion of the BCN Health Booster accelerator! Three years boosting innovation 🤝 The Parc Científic de Barcelona has hosted the closing ceremony of the BCN Health Booster, a programme that has supported innovative startups in the health sector for the last three years. Promoted by the Barcelona Science Park, the Universitat de Barcelona and the Ajuntament de Barcelona, with the support of Biocat, BioRegion of Catalonia, it has proved to be a growth engine. With a total funding of 107.5 million euros raised, the 11 participating companies have obtained 66 granted patents. The day has included witnesses from startup CEOs, highlighting the impact of the programme on their development. Biocat has played a key role in this initiative, offering personalized mentoring to each startup, providing specialized training in entrepreneurship and technical aspects, and facilitating strategic connections with investors and key industry players. The #BCNHealthInnovationWeek is coming to an end, but yesterday was packed with exciting sessions! 🚀 📅 February 20 🔹 Research | Highlights included the Merck on Tour exploring solutions for translating R&D advancements into commercial therapies. Rafael Moreno from PONTI & PARTNERS discussed the use of patented products in scientific research and exceptions allowing legitimate use. 🔹 Innovation | The Tech Spirit Barcelona – Health Edition 2025 showcased technology applied to Life Sciences, gathering leaders in healthcare innovation. The session on Digital Social Innovation for Health and Well-being of i2CAT highlighted transformative digital solutions, while Accelerating Paediatric and Maternity Health from i4KIDS I i4KIDS-EUROPE focused on impactful healthcare initiatives for children and mothers. 🔹 Acceleration | The Training MEDICAL DEVICES acc FDA from Tecno-med Ingenieros SL reviewed adaptation strategies for U.S. marketing authorization, and the #CRAASHBCN Closing Event of Biocat, BioRegion of Catalonia featured final presentations from startup teams. 🔹 Industry | A roundtable on Artificial Intelligence in Healthcare in 2025 where ACES - Associació Catalana d'Entitats de Salut examined emerging AI technologies and their impact on healthcare. Additionally, the activity “Beyond Digitalization: Building a Lean, Agile, and Efficient Healthcare System” from the Hospital de la Santa Creu i Sant Pau Validation Center explored how optimizing processes can enhance patient experience and system efficiency. 🔹 Digital Health | A roundtable moderated by Marta Santiago from Barcelona Health Hub explored advancements in digital health. 🔹 Tech Transfer | The Bridge to Industry from IRB Barcelona connected life sciences researchers with venture capitalists for funding insights. The Share & Connect: Nursing and Innovation + Gastronomic Workshop from Xartec Salut showcased nurse-led projects and promoted collaboration through a gastronomic networking experience 🔹 Tech Spirit | A fireside chat with Montse Daban Marín, Carmen Rios and Cecilia Edebo discussed the Draghi report. Additionally, Robert Fabregat Fuentes led a fireside chat with Ramon Maspons Bosch focusing on innovation adoption in the Catalan health system and the initial results of the PASS. The third day of the #BCNHealthInnovationWeek was filled with exciting developments! 🚀 📅 February 19 🔹 Research | Highlights included Merck on Tour exploring solutions for translating R&D into therapies, the VII mHealth BCN Conference focusing on digital health for active aging, and the shift to 3D cell culture for improved drug development. 🔹 Business | InnovaMed showcased CMO services, AGC Pharma Chemicals invited companies for a plant tour, and the companies Evideze and IOMED discussed the European Health Data Space. The HBA activity, which concluded yesterday, featured a “Case Study: Pharma 4.0 Transformation” from MIGSO-PCUBED. 🔹 Innovation | Attendees discovered BASID, Barcelona’s private hub for life sciences, and learned about impactful personalized medicine projects. The new “VHIR Innovation Process and Innovation HUB: driving the future of Healthcare” was launched by the Vall d’Hebron Institute of Research (VHIR) - Vall d'Hebron Institut de Recerca, and “PERSONALIZED MEDICINE IN ACTION: FROM THE LABORATORY TO SOCIETY” from Ibec was presented, featuring Montse Daban Marín, Director of Strategic Analysis and International Relations at Biocat. 🚀 Catalonia’s Biotech Hub Gears Up for #BIOSPAIN2025 Yesterday, Javier Padilla, the Secretary of State for Health of the Government of Spain joined the official presentation of BIOSPAIN Barcelona 2025, organized by AseBio - Asociación Española de Bioempresas in collaboration with Biocat, BioRegion of Catalonia, the Government of Catalonia, and the Ajuntament de Barcelona. 🌍 AseBio - Asociación Española de Bioempresas and Biocat present Biospain 2025 in Barcelona BIOSPAIN Barcelona 2025 was presented today to more than a hundred professionals from the biotechnology sector. The event was attended by Javier Padilla, Secretary of State for Health of the Spanish Government; Joan Romero i Circuns, representing the Generalitat de Catalunya; Jordi Valls, representing the Ajuntament de Barcelona; Rocio Arroyo, president of AseBio - Asociación Española de Bioempresas; and Robert Fabregat, CEO of Biocat. In addition, a round table, moderated by Ion Arocena, CEO of AseBio, has been organized with the participation of Ysios Capital, 3PBIOVIAN and Nostrum Biodiscovery to talk about their experience as participants in previous editions of Biospain. According to Robert Fabregat Fuentes “the Catalan ecosystem is an international leader in the business, scientific and health fields. From Biocat we work to promote its growth, improve the health system and accelerate the arrival of new technologies to patients. This new edition will be decisive to generate business opportunities and facilitate collaboration between all the agents in the sector's value chain and, therefore, to accelerate the arrival of new technologies to the market and to patients” 📈 The next edition is expected to match the record figures of 2023: ✅ +2,200 professionals from 34 countries ✅ +5,000 one-on-one meetings ✅ +81 national and international investors In addition, the focus on green biotechnology is expanded and Switzerland will be the guest country. 📅 7 and 9 October 2025. 📰 L’Informe de la BioRegió 2024 reafirma Catalunya com a un dels principals hubs d’innovació en salut a Europa. 📢 Més de 100 mitjans, incloent 3Cat Corporatiu, s’han fet ressò de la presentació de l’Informe de la BioRegió de Catalunya 2024, que destaca el creixement del sector i el seu impacte econòmic. 📊 Dades clau de l’ecosistema: 🔹 Representa el 7,6% del PIB i agrupa més de 1.500 empreses, el 90% de les quals són pimes. 🔹 Catalunya lidera el comerç exterior en ciències de la vida i la salut, exportant més del 40% del total de l’Estat. 🔹 Més de 280.000 persones treballen en el sector, el 7,3% de la població ocupada. 🔹 La inversió estrangera ha assolit un nou rècord el 2024 amb 550 M€, generant 1.700 nous llocs de treball. 🔹 Les startups i scaleups han captat 347 M€, la segona millor xifra de la seva història. #Catalunya es consolida com a referent global en recerca i innovació biomèdica, amb 5.368 assajos clínics en actiu i liderant el desenvolupament de teràpies avançades. 💡 Un ecosistema que continua creixent i situant Catalunya entre els grans hubs d’innovació en salut a Europa.
