With AFM, it is not possible to differentiate the proteins on the substrate if use is made of the height signal, since the roughness of the material becomes of the same order of magnitude as the adsorbed protein, typically 10 nm height. This work shows how AFM can be exploited to reveal protein conformation on polymer materials. Different laminin morphologies are observed on a series of different copolymers based on ethyl acrylate and hydroxyethyl acrylate as a function of the surface density of −OH groups: from globular to completely extended morphologies of the protein molecules are obtained, and the onset of laminin network formation on some substrates can be clearly identified. The results stress the importance of the underlying synthetic substrate’s surface chemistry for the biofunctional conformation of adsorbed proteins. date: 2007-07-01 date_type: published id_number: 10.1529/biophysj.106.102491 uniqueid: glaseprints:2007-77173 issn_online: 1542-0086 scopus_impact: 24 scopus_cluster: 2-s2.0-34447269885 scopus_datestamp: 2013-10-26 09:33:21 wos_impact: 18 wos_cluster: WOS:000247061500023 wos_datestamp: 2013-05-21 23:21:00 full_text_status: none publication: Biophysical Journal volume: 93 number: 1 pagerange: 202-207 refereed: TRUE issn: 0006-3495 hoa_compliant: 305 hoa_date_pub: 2007-07-01 hoa_exclude: FALSE hoa_gold: FALSE citation: Rodríguez Hernández, J.C., Salmerón-Sánchez, M. , Soria, J.M., Gómez Ribelles, J.L. and Monleón Pradas, M.
