Probabilistic inference about the pose of the finger is carried out in real-time using a particle filter; this results in an efficient and robust pose estimator which also gives appropriate uncertainty estimates. We show empirically that tracking the full pose of the finger results in greater accuracy in pointing tasks with small targets than competitive techniques. Our model can detect and cope with different finger sizes and the use of either fingers or thumbs, bringing a significant potential for improvement in one-handed interaction with touch devices. In addition to the gain in accuracy we also give examples of how this technique could open up the space of novel interactions. date: 2011 date_type: published id_number: 10.1145/1978942.1979318 official_url: http://dx.doi.org/10.1145/1978942.1979318 uniqueid: glaseprints:2011-56235 funding_project_code: 44617 funding_award_no: 1 funding_project_name: Multimodal,Negotiated interaction in mobile scenarios funding_investigator_name: Roderick Murray-Smith funding_funder_name: Engineering & Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC) funding_funder_code: EP/E042740/1 funding_investigator_dept: COM - COMPUTING SCIENCE scopus_impact: 5 scopus_cluster: 2-s2.0-79958122473 scopus_datestamp: 2013-10-26 04:21:09 full_text_status: none pagerange: 2575-2584 event_title: CHI 2011 : ACM CHI Conference on Human Factors in Computing Systems event_location: Vancouver, B.C. event_dates: 7-12 May 2011 event_type: conference refereed: TRUE book_title: Proceedings of the 2011 annual conference on Human factors in computing systems - CHI '11 hoa_date_pub: 2011 hoa_exclude: FALSE hoa_gold: FALSE citation: Rogers, S. , Williamson, J. , Stewart, C. and Murray-Smith, R.
