Abstract
Electro-sensitive (ES) elastomers are "smart materials" whose mechanical properties may be changed significantly by the application of an electric field. In this paper, we provide a theoretical basis for the characterization of the nonlinear electroelastic properties of these materials. The theory is then applied to some simple prototype boundary-value problems in order to illustrate the effect of an electric field on the mechanical response.
