Johan/Jan van Beethoven (born 14 November 1740 somewhere in the Netherlands[1][2] - died 18 December 1792 in Bonn) was Ludwig van Beethoven's father.

Johan (often later Germanized to Johann) was a descendant of a Dutch family of musicians and instrument makers from former Brabant (presumably the Mechelen-Leuven area) who shortly after Johan himself was born (in the Netherlands) moved to Bonn in 1741.[3] He was the son of Lodewijk van Beethoven (1712 in Mechelen - 1773 in Bonn), Kapellmeister at the court of the Prince-Archbishop-Elector of Cologne Clemens August of Bavaria at Bonn, and Maria Josepha Ball (married 1733). The famous Ludwig van Beethoven is named after his grandfather, said Lodewijk[4] van Beethoven.

Johan married Maria Magdalena Keverich (1746 in Ehrenbreitstein1787) on 12 November 1767 in St.Remigius church, Bonn. He worked as a musician in the Electoral court at Bonn. Johan was an alcoholic and Ludwig had to support the family at a young age. Johann realized Ludwig's talent and became his first teacher. Because of Johan's alcohol problem, he would pull Beethoven out of bed late at night and order him to play the piano and or violin for his friends. It is said that Johan was a violent father when it came to Beethoven's music. Whenever Beethoven would play poorly, Johan would exclaim that it was an embarrassment to the family.
