With the Arctic warming 4x faster than the global average, Arctic security is vital for Canada. Lockheed Martin Canada was honoured to attend the Montréal Climate Security Summit, where Foreign Affairs Minister Mélanie Joly spoke of recalibrating Canada’s Arctic Foreign Policy. TSB released its investigation report (R23Q0022) into a train operated by Quebec North Shore and Labrador (QNS&L) that passed a signal displaying a Stop indication on its way to Mai Station, Quebec, in February 2023. The investigation found that despite the signal being visible 0.75 miles away, the locomotive engineer did not undertake the braking manoeuvres required to stop before the signal. About 50 feet from the signal, the locomotive engineer realized that it was displaying a Stop indication and applied full dynamic braking and the emergency brakes. There was no collision or derailment, and there were no injuries. The investigation found that there have been 12 occurrences, including this one, of QNS&L trains passing Stop signals in the last 10 years. Following the occurrence, the TSB issued a safety information letter to QNS&L on the supervision of newly qualified locomotive engineers. As a result, QNS&L made changes to its evaluation program and increased the frequency of evaluations by supervisors in the field. Reflecting on past challenges is crucial to shaping a resilient future in aerial firefighting. United Aerial Firefighters Association (UAFA) has identified key issues and is actively advocating for solutions to ensure a robust firefighting infrastructure. Issue 1: Wildland Firefighter Pay Firefighter pay remains a pressing concern, pivotal to the effectiveness of aerial firefighting operations. UAFA supports increased federal firefighter pay to retain skilled ground crews essential for successful aerial support. Issue 2: Determining Aircraft Needs The debate over the number and types of firefighting aircraft persists. UAFA seeks to fill the gap left by the unresolved Aerial Firefighting Use and Effectiveness (AFUE) study, advocating for data-driven decisions to determine optimal aircraft standards and capabilities. Issue 3: Stability in Contracting Short-term contracts pose a significant challenge to aerial firefighting companies, hindering maintenance, pilot retention, and technological upgrades. UAFA urges Congress to streamline contract processes and integrate preparedness and suppression funds for stability and readiness. As they navigate these challenges, UAFA remains committed to collaborating with stakeholders to enhance wildfire response capabilities. The Barracuda M line is made up of three different weapons: the M-100, M-250, and M-500 cruise missiles. Sandboxx News has written at length about the M-500 which is meant to serve as a low-cost alternative, or supplement to, America’s very big and very pricey AGM-158 JASSM line of air-launched cruise missiles. While the M-500 is less capable than the JASSM cruise missiles it would fly alongside, the M-100 significantly outclasses the weapons it could feasibly replace. The M-100 was designed to be carried by rotorcraft like the AH-64 Apache gunship or the AH-1 Cobra, in very much the same way these platforms carry Hellfire missiles today. (Although it could feasibly be launched by any of the long list of other platforms that carry Hellfires.) Indeed, the M-100 is very close in size to the long-serving AGM-114 Hellfire, and even closer in size to the AGM-179 Joint Air to Ground Missile (JAGM) that’s meant to replace the Hellfire. The M-100 is about 70 inches long with a six-inch diameter and weighs roughly 110 pounds. In comparison, the AGM-114 is 64 inches long, with a seven-inch diameter and a total weight of around 104 to 108 pounds; and the new AGM-179, which is 70 inches long with a seven-inch diameter and an undisclosed total weight. https://lnkd.in/eHg7vZpP
