What’s the difference between PM / Head of / CPO roles? Titles vary a lot from company to company depending on their stage, but broadly there are four main levels in a PM career*: 1. 𝗜𝗻𝗱𝗶𝘃𝗶𝗱𝘂𝗮𝗹 𝗖𝗼𝗻𝘁𝗿𝗶𝗯𝘂𝘁𝗼𝗿 𝘦.𝘨. 𝘈𝘗𝘔 / 𝘑𝘯𝘳 𝘗𝘔 / 𝘗𝘔 / 𝘚𝘯𝘳 𝘗𝘔 / 𝘓𝘦𝘢𝘥 𝘗𝘔 -> Working in a cross-functional team with engineers and designers to ship features. -> You’re working out what to build, building it right, and launching it well. 2. 𝗠𝗮𝗻𝗮𝗴𝗲𝗿 𝘦.𝘨. 𝘏𝘦𝘢𝘥 𝘰𝘧 / 𝘎𝘳𝘰𝘶𝘱 𝘗𝘔 / 𝘓𝘦𝘢𝘥 𝘗𝘔 -> Managing individual contributors, and helping them reach peak performance. -> You’re hiring and coaching other PMs, and dealing with underperformance. 3. How to make your product descriptions convert.  4 tips for compelling copy: 1. 𝗞𝗻𝗼𝘄 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗮𝘂𝗱𝗶𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲    Picture your target customer. Think about what motivates them and what their pain points are. Think about how they talk, how their friends describe them, and what fills their cup. Now write for 𝘵𝘩𝘦𝘮.     2. 𝗙𝗼𝗰𝘂𝘀 𝗼𝗻 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗯𝗲𝗻𝗲𝗳𝗶𝘁𝘀    A list of features tells your customers what a product is, but not why they need it. Communicate what problem this product will solve or how it will enhance their life.     3. 𝗣𝗮𝗶𝗻𝘁 𝗮 𝗽𝗶𝗰𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗲    When customers can’t experience a product in person, use words that close the sensory gap. Soft, warm, aromatic, iridescent – tell your customers what they can expect from the product once they’ve got their hands on it.     4. 𝗠𝗮𝗸𝗲 𝗶𝘁 𝘀𝗰𝗮𝗻𝗻𝗮𝗯𝗹𝗲    You've got a matter of seconds to get your key messages across. Use short sentences, with clear keywords and avoid chunky paragraphs.        Make important information like ingredients and specifications digestible with sub-headings and bullet points. Don’t Marry Your Ideas: Face the Truth About Your Product Stats As product leaders, it’s crucial to face the truth about the state of our products. Sometimes we fail to acknowledge that our product isn’t what users need, there’s strong competition, a tricky monetization model, or scalability issues. Perhaps users love it but won’t pay a penny for it—getting users to pay is the ultimate validation. Having 2 or 3 users occasionally paying (most likely friends and team members) doesn’t count. There must be a sustainable pipeline of customers, even if there are bottlenecks or challenges. A strong need should be obvious from day one. Acknowledging failure early on is much better than complimenting yourself, your team, and stakeholders, leading to what you know eventually won’t work. Don’t marry your ideas—especially those you’ve invested a lot of effort into, even if they’re not originally yours. We often become too attached to our ideas, but sometimes letting go is the best path forward. When I was interviewing at Maze, one of the things that made me most excited to join was a conversation I had with Jonathan Widawski where we talked about this exact topic. All the speed in the world isn't going to help if you're not building things people actually need. And it goes beyond that - it's about building what people need, *in the way that actually supports what they're trying to do*. That's not the kind of insight you can get without research, no matter how much intuition you think you have for your users. It's also way too easy for teams to say research takes too much time, or to silo insights to a single point in their process instead of doing research at the times you actually need it to make decisions. Research isn't a checkbox. It's a tool for building the right thing in the right way. It brings me a lot of joy to be part of a company that not only operates that way when we're building products, but enables others to build products that way, too.
