Is the tank still relevant? What about bombers and fighter jets? Let’s take a look. The main US battle tank is the M1 Abrams. Last year, the US sent 31 tanks to Ukraine. In the last two months, Ukraine lost 5 M1s, and 3 more were damaged. Most of the destruction appears to have been caused by Lancet drones. According to the The Associated Press, Ukraine pulled the remaining tanks from the front line because Russian drones made it difficult to operate the tanks without detection or coming under attack. In addition to the technical mismatch—drones being more capable than tanks—there’s an economic mismatch. According to Reuters News Agency, the cost of 31 tanks was $400 million, or $13 million per tank. Lancet drones cost approximately $35,000, and according to some experts, Lancets have a 20-25% success rate. That would mean the Russians spent less than $200,000 to destroy each M1, or 60 times less. Troop assaults need i) armored protection during transportation and ii) direct fire support during assault. Both can only be supplied by tanks. M1 is expensive is because it was designed to survive anti-tank missile hits, making it very heavy at 68 tons. To cope with the extra weight, the M1 is powered by a jet engine. Because of surveillance drones and satellites, concentrating forces for a deep armored thrust (first devised during WW2) is not going to be an effective strategy. Assaults will be led by smaller, highly mobile, and maneuverable units. With that in mind, we should redesign our tanks—take out weight and reduce their size. This will increase speed, maneuverability, and reduce cost. To future-proof them, we should also install autonomous driving capabilities. Autonomy will be a first step toward the integration of AI with human decision-making. I think tanks will continue to remain relevant; but, design and tactics need to evolve. One notable component missing from Ukraine is airpower. The Russians never launched deep air strikes and only recently, after Ukraine ran out of air defense systems, Russians stepped up their close air support missions, but drone strikes continue to be more prevalent. Drones dominate for obvious reasons: they are easier to coordinate, quicker to respond, and are widely available. The air force is the exact opposite: hard to coordinate/execute close air support, aircraft are stationed away from the front line, and the number of aircraft is very limited. Perhaps the time has come to revisit our air assets. Why send a B-21 ($692m) on a bombing mission when the same mission could be accomplished by a missile or long-range strike drone? There are startup companies developing hypersonic missiles costing low millions of dollars, drones might be even cheaper. With production rates of approximately 10 plane/year B-21 is not scalable. The F-35 is similar: $80m/plane and 156 planes/year. Ultimately, all conflicts are economic. Side with more favorable economic ratio always wins. #21stcenturyoffset

There are over 2000 people here in Berlin for #urc2024. Lots of Ukraine federal/state/city level government people. Many Ukrainian companies—most in the drone or mining spaces. Lots of German and EU government officials. Many civil society organizations. Almost no institutional investors, and very few banks. Not a single investment bank other than Mits Capital. For Ukraine to “recover” it needs three things. 1. Control of its airspace. 2. Offensive munitions 3. MONEY. Note to Ukraine—we are going to need to attract private investment capital. Yes, European government funding will be critical as a catalyst. But we need to make Ukraine attractive to private capital. Now is the time to start the marketing campaign. How big is the Electoral College Bias? At Bergos AG we will begin our detailed analysis of the US elections in early October (from then on there will be a major release every week). Before that it dosen’t make sense. The race is simply too close. But we will point out a few important things beforehand in September. Today, for example, we’re dealing with the so-called „Electoral College Bias“. The Silver Bulletin has the Electoral College Bias as being slightly less than in the past two elections. It was R +3.7 in 2016 and R +3.5 in 2020. By comparison, the current polling averages and forecasts have it at between R +2.4 and R +2.5 this time around. Still, a two-and-a-half-point Electoral College Bias is a lot to overcome in a political environment when most elections are extremely close. So as you can see from the chart below, the Electoral College would be in toss-up range even if Harris wins the popular vote by between 2 and 3 points. And she’d need to win the popular vote by roughly 4 points to be truly „safe“ in the Electoral College.
