We are underway with our next assignment, which is local split-screen multiplayer. I had thought there would be far more complex systems for creating a split-screen game, however, it turns out it is fairly easy when using the new input system with its built-in input manager. There was no need to set up any special coding for managing the two cameras separately, or a need to set up different render planes to render each camera to an individual render texture, just select the allow split-screen option and set up keys in the control map as joining actions. And enable the option to join the game via said actions. And then we have a split-screen multiplayer, well a very basic one, now we need to focus on the rest of the systems and mechanics that need to be added to the system. #srudentgamedev #indiegamedev #madewithunity

19K games were published on Steam in 2024; amplifying the glut, er...trend. That's a 33% YoY increase. However, the real story here is the % of "Limited Games." Coffee up, nerds... First, let me just say that there are nuances here; I'm expecting a diverse spectrum of experiences and opinions as a result. I'm not making declarations of truth, outside of the data itself. Implications of the data are broad - and they affect different developers in different ways. We good? Caveats, waivers, and disclaimers properly set? I'm just going to assume yes. I'm also going to assume that I'm going to miss a ton here...that's fine though - that's why you're here. Feel free to fill in the gaps, set me straight, or enlighten the class with new perspectives. I'm here for all of it. Ok...so first - what the hell is a "limited game?" Essentially, any game with metrics that do not hit player and sales thresholds (set by Valve corporation), are flagged as "Profile Features Limited." Games in this category do not receive profile customization options (such as badges), limiting their community appeal. Perhaps more importantly: these games do not count toward a player's Game Collector or Achievement Collector totals...meaning a player can not display their prowess of these games to other gamers. Why though? In short: quality control. By holding back features until a game finds an audience, they are able to control which games are validated (for lack of a better term). "Shovelware" is a brutal, cynical term - unfortunately, it is often warranted. Of the 19K games in 2024...how many fit that description...and how many are worth downloading and then lying to yourself that you'll eventually play (truth hurts, eh)? Well...in 2024 - 15K of those 19K games were limited games. That's 79%...is that a lot? It is if you compare it to 2023, when 73% were limited games. In fact, if you look at the data going back to 2018 (when this bifurcation began), 2024 had the highest rate of limited games ever. % of games published per year that were "limited games": 2018 = 33% 2019 = 66% 2020 = 68% 2021 = 71% 2022 = 72% 2023 = 73% 2024 = 79% So what does this tell us? I'm guessing there are some disagreements on whether Valve should be throttling games at all. Games are hard...as anyone who has ever built a game will tell you. Actually, even people who haven't built one will tell you that, because they've heard it so often. "Games are hard" might as well be our industry motto. I do sympathize with Valve here though. Ultimately - I think this makes sense. And...if you think 19K games is a lot...look at UEFN. There are about 140,000 games there now - and that's in under 2 years. The reality is...today, "making games" is easy (thus, the glut). Making GOOD games is hard. Johan Pilestedt, the CCO of Arrowhead draws the line (literally) on collaborations for Helldivers, while also showcasing the core tenets of the game/studio. Such tenets include: Avoiding IP Dilution - Only choose IP's that are appropriate for the Helldivers IP: close to 1:1 match - Remember that crossovers would become canon in the universe of helldivers - Immersion breaks for other players - Limit the rate of collaborations, too much will dilute - Be conservative and stringent as crossovers compound As authentic as we can - Try to do right by the source IP and it's fans - Strive to modify as little as possible - Seek to become experts of the source material Review often - To review the effects of the IP after each collaborations As a fan, I appreciate their approach because it helps maintain the distinct identity of their game. Interesting how the first tenant specifically calls for protection of its intellectual property (IP), and I agree. Don't just take my word for it. "A franchise is like a bank account. The Games Industry Needs Half-Life 3 To Survive The industry feels like its in freefall and it’s all our fault. We didnt pay attention to the warning signs - reduction in new IP, exploding budgets, fast follow methodology of genres and modes, predatory and addictive monetization methods, and we stopped having fun as an industry. We stopped creating and being original, and fans got bored and more demanding. Originality does’nt have to be huge leaps forward, it can be creative surprises. While Im bullish on AI and UGC platforms - story and new game mechanics are most important. But right now we need a big surprise to win back the gamer generation that’s grown tired of the same stuff different year. Yes, I know Half-Life 3 is a mirage but its also a mythical franchise that can infuse the entire industry with energy and set a new bar for story and technical achievement. It’s the kind of game that inspires other developers to reach further and publishers to take bigger risks. Its also the type of game that doesnt feel like a rinse and repeat franchise, so it leaves the player wanting and searching for more originality. It’s the kind of game that will sell millions of indie games, AA publisher games (if they are priced well) and it will pull players away from their phones and back into the world’s we all dream of creating. Please Valve corporation we are counting on you.

Building technology for a 13 year old game is no small feat.  Did you know Star Stable Entertainment AB has its own engine, tools, server architecture, and even a custom scripting language? With a weekly release schedule and years of accumulated tech debt, cracks began to show. It was clear: something had to change.  Three years ago, we shifted our strategy to tackle these challenges head on. Here’s how we did it in 4 key steps:  1. Stop Adding to Tech Debt:      Technical debt is unavoidable, but adding more? That's a choice. We prioritized addressing it immediately to prevent snowballing issues.  2. Understand Your Tech Debt:      We mapped out dependencies, measured their impact on features, and linked them to business KPIs. This made decisions more informed and progress more measurable.  3. Tackle It Bit by Bit:      Instead of waiting for “the perfect time,” we dedicated just 10% of each sprint to fixing tech debt. Small efforts consistently made a big difference.  4. Be Bold:      When refactoring wasn’t enough, we didn’t shy away from rebuilding major systems. Sure, it was risky, but careful planning and execution led to results beyond our expectations.  The result?   Today, Star Stable’s technology is stronger than ever, and we’re excited to show you what’s next in 2025!  How do you approach tech debt in your projects?

Creating a game in a very small team of just two people is an interesting journey as you get to dabble in many different areas. I've even dipped my toes in the Unreal Engine 5 node programming - but we shall not speak of that... eh-heheh (I got tons to learn there). But as a generalist I definitely thrive when I get to play with and problem solve in many different tasks and roles. Going through the whole pipeline of creating a character from Sketch to alive and moving inside a game. Sketching ideas, creating concept art, key art, Logos, 3D objects, environments, compositions, mood, light, sound work, vfx, UI, UX, story work, record footage, edit together videos, social medias, marketing, and also taking care of the company, the team as well as growing and becoming a good leader and boss. (Here I also got a long way to go). I've probably forgotten some things. Cause there is definitely A LOT to do, and there is no wonder people burn out. Cause on top of this - we need to take care of life. And that's SO easy right? #easypeasy #gamedev #generalist #indie #life

I tumbled upon this Jason Della Rocca old post and I believe it's a must read, as it clearly summarizes a new trend in investment policies within the gaming sector. In a nuthsell: indie studios need to start the publishing process by themselves, in order to build evidence that their product worth the investment. A publishing partner may jump on board later, when traction signals lower the risk. So late last year I took a decision to open my own studio: to invest hard earned money into something that I have always dreamt off. This is where I decided to start up Epic Nuggets. Together with colleagues of mine I will be representing my studio in #gamescom2024 next week. We are looking for successful publishers. We have a stand next to GamingMalta I met John Chasoulidis Abela 🔜 Gamescom and Juliano Castro two amazing guys that are both pillars the the projects we will deliver. As a founder I have a responsibility, and the one I partook was that of tech. Something I became a guru in over the last few years…and developing the games myself is as rewarding as any success! I, though migh need some help in the future so if you are an amazing Unity dev, get in touch with me! #unity The studio is born out of love of games. From Kanon Gaming Limited being a company I started 12 years ago, I have learnt a lot and thanks to it, we could get a team together to start developing games outside the gambling world. Epic Nuggets and any investments I further take in it in the future will be dedicated to Skeeve, my late Jack Russell best friend! In fact we announce Skeeve Productions which will absorb Epic Nuggets as a brand and focus on amazing console and Pc games, mobile games and also Educational games!
