HIMSS24 European Health Conference & Exhibition is Currently Underway in Rome The HIMSS24 European Health Conference & Exhibition is taking place in Rome from May 29 to May 31. A key topic within the global health challenges track is "Powering Transformation through Progressive Public-Private Partnerships." Today, our colleague Vadym Terentyuk, a Candidate of Medical Sciences and Associate Professor of Healthcare Management at Bogomolets National Medical University, Secretary of the Interdepartmental Working Group of the Ministry of Health of Ukraine for Telemedicine Development, and Head of the Telemedicine Development Department at SE "Electronic Health," presented the Ukrainian Public-Private Partnerships model. Why do Public-Private Partnerships play a key role in the digital transformation of Ukrainian healthcare? What are the indicators of an effective public-private partnership, and what metrics should be used to measure its success? These are just a few of the issues addressed by Vadym Terentyuk during his presentation and speech. Solving healthcare’s most complex challenges increasingly requires collaboration across sectors. The rapid development of COVID-19 vaccines was a prime example of healthcare and commerce working together for the greater good. Outside of a crisis, public-private partnerships (PPPs) can be fraught with difficulties and met with skepticism and mistrust. So, what does a blueprint for an effective, well-designed PPP look like that other nations can adopt? Ukraine and other European nations have deployed PPPs as a core pillar of their national digital transformation strategies. Industry collaboration has been pivotal in the rapid modernization of Ukraine’s healthcare system and its 'overnight' transition from a paper-based system to a national e-Health service used by 36 million citizens. “In a very short time, my country has made significant strides in the digitization of healthcare over the past 7 years. From zero to 36 million unique entries in the national e-Health system. On one hand, we must share our experience, and on the other, we still have much to learn and many risks to manage. We have initiated changes to the digital training of medical workers at the national level and many other interesting activities. As for telemedicine, in which I am directly involved, I can cautiously say that we are building an innovative model that will be integrated into the national e-Health system,” Vadym Terentyuk noted. Well-designed PPPs, with the commitment and support of the government, can deliver benefits for both citizens and national development goals. This model increasingly saves governmental resources. 🎉 We just launched the Unitaid Oxygen Innovation Landscape to increase access to medical oxygen globally. Did you know, "medical oxygen is essential for treating various conditions, but nearly 25 million deaths occur annually due to lack of access, many of which could be prevented." Spark Health Design's team including Elizabeth Johansen, Dr. Gordon Adomdza, and David Hutchful were honored to work with Pablo Vega and Evan Spark-DePass of Unitaid to create this oxygen innovation landscape. The landscape includes examples of oxygen technology and business model innovations that might help increase oxygen access for people in low- and middle-income settings. “These advancements offer a rare opportunity to save countless lives, but without sustained investment and strategic deployment, their impact will remain limited,” said Unitaid’s Director of Strategy Janet Ginnard. “It’s not just about scaling what works – it’s about refining and adapting these innovations to ensure they are truly accessible and effective in the most challenging environments.” Many thanks to the long list of additional people who also contributed to this effort and who are listed in the acknowledgments. 🌐 A few weeks ago, we released the global interim report of our project on building digital first health systems. https://lnkd.in/dSXnjxBN This report shows that young people have a clear vision for digital first health systems and want to be actively in co-creating them. In order to contribute to this vision, our Regional Youth Champions (RYC) were invited to share a short essay on what a digital first health system means to them. 📖 In this collection of essays, seven RYC reflect on a special priority area affecting global health governance and how digital first health systems offer a promising way forward in improving the health and well-being of young people in a digital age. In this context the European Union – Latin America and Caribbean International Foundation (EU-LAC Foundation / Fundación EU-LAC) and the German-Latin American Centre for Infection and Epidemiology Research (GLACIER) are joining forces to convene an International Symposium ‘Collaborating for Global Health: Shared Challenges & Responsibilities’, to be held on 25 June 2024 at the Charité, Berlin. This high-level one-day event will bring together researchers from different disciplines, specialised organisations, public officials and interested members of the general public from Europe and Latin America and the Caribbean to learn from the pandemic experience and to discuss how to develop more robust and reliable structures and mechanisms for cooperation to enable both regions to engage in more coordinated measures to prepare for and respond to current and future health challenges. This week, world leaders are coming together at the UN in New York for #UNGA to agree on how to address critical global health challenges, and among them the growing threat of antimicrobial resistance. The Public Health Agency of Sweden with its WHO Collaborating centre, hosted a side event with WHO Member States to discuss the need of cross-country solidarity. Ministers and other high-level representatives participated from 13 countries, among them our own Swedish Minister of Health Care Ms Acko Ankarberg Johansson.  – With this meeting, we wanted to highlight the importance of solidarity. Antimicrobial resistance knows no borders and countries with weak health systems are the hardest hit. Here there are many challenges though: rapid rural-to-urban migration, changing disease patterns, changing needs and expectations of patients/clients as a result of increased economic capacity and lifestyle changes and needs, a burgeoning private sector primarily motivated by profit and a host of other social, economic, climatological and geographical factors. These are pressing challenges that stand in the way of achieving UHC through the prevailing health sector system. Achieving the ambitious goal of UHC by 2030 is indeed going to be a formidable challenge also in view of the limited time span to the target timeline, resource constraints and the complexity of the issues that will need to be addressed. Consequently, hard choices will have to be made. In this backdrop, programmes targeting the most vulnerable with the highest impact will need to be prioritised in sequencing the actions to be taken. The Policy Brief has been developed on the basis of existing knowledge, literature review and expert opinion, and aims to review the relevant issues and identify the challenges and opportunities. The Brief puts forward a set of concrete proposals to attain UHC in Bangladesh in alignment with SDG 3. Today at #AIDS2024, Olga Gvozdetska, Acting Deputy Director General of the Public Health Centre of the Ministry of Health of Ukraine, delivered an impassioned speech at the opening plenary, highlighting the resilience of #Ukraine's public health sector. Over the past two years, despite wartime challenges, Ukrainian doctors have acted with determination and innovation to ensure they can continue to provide quality #HIV care aligned with World Health Organization protocols. This progress would not have been possible, Ms. Gvozdetska noted, without the unwavering support of NGOs, civil society, and international donors. December 12 is for Universal Health Coverage (UHC)! Today, the Research Institute for Tropical Medicine is one with all healthcare institutions in the world in campaigning for stronger collective action from its fellow actors in the government in promoting and implementing #UHC for all! The theme for this year's #UHCDay celebration is “Health: It's on the government”. In the last two (2) decades, approximately 2 billion people across the globe have experienced financial woes and 1.3 billion are said to be pushed into poverty due to expenses related to health concerns. To help alleviate this situation, we heed the call to prioritize accessible health for all, particularly the underprivileged populations. As currently being implemented in other government healthcare facilities and select private healthcare partners, RITM actively promotes and provides medical assistance to vulnerable populations through the Medical Assistance to Indigent Patients (MAIP) Program. In 2019, Republic Act No. 11463, commonly known as Malasakit Act of 2019 was enacted which created the Malasakit Program to augment the MAIP. This paved the way for the establishment of several Malasakit Centers across the country --- extending more financial and medical assistance to indigent patients and families. RITM houses the 100th Malasakit Center in the country which was inaugurated in 2021. On 3 June, EuropeActive had the pleasure of attending EuroHealthNet Annual Seminar 2024 ‘Navigating times of change for public health’ in Utrecht, Netherlands. 🇳🇱 The seminar focused on how we can advance public health in times of change linked to the upcoming European elections and the green and digital transition. Moreover, conflict on our borders, rising costs of living, the climate crisis and demographic change add to the uncertainty, affect the most vulnerable and deepen inequalities. An excellent line of speakers from the Dutch ministry, World Health Organization/ Europe, OECD - OCDE, academia and civil society, presented new insights on mental health, wellbeing and health behaviours and how they can be applied to improve health equity in Europe.
