secureblue
secureblue is an immutable, security-focused desktop and server Linux operating system based on Fedora Atomic Desktop's base images - Silverblue, Kinoite and Sway Atomic. The project's goal is to build a maximally secure Linux operating system by proactively increasing defenses against the exploitation of both known and unknown vulnerabilities, while avoiding sacrificing usability for most use cases. Some of the security hardening features include a global hardened memory allocator developed by GrapheneOS, a security-focused Chromium-based browser called Trivalent, and Linux kernel hardening via sysctl and kernel arguments.

Nate Graham has announced the availability of the inaugural release of KDE Linux, a general-purpose Linux distribution built by the KDE project and featuring cutting-edge KDE technologies. KDE Linux comes with an immutable base system with packages from Arch Linux, while everything else is either compiled by the kde-builder tool or included as Flatpak packages. This release is considered "alpha" quality and it comes with a development snapshot of KDE Plasma 4.5. "Today I have something very exciting to share - the alpha release of KDE Linux, KDE's new operating system. KDE Linux is a new operating system intended for daily driving that showcases Plasma and KDE software in the best light, and makes use of modern technologies. Today we're releasing KDE Linux's 'Testing' edition. This edition provides unreleased KDE software built from source code, a preview of what will become the next stable release. In practice, we're being quite conservative, and it's already pretty darn stable for daily use. In fact, I've had KDE Linux on my home theater PC for about six months, and it has been on my daily driver laptop for one month." Read the rest of the release announcement for more information and known issues. KDE Linux is available as a RAW image that can be transferred to a bootable USB drive or converted to a VDI file and loaded in VirtualBox. The Linux Mint team have announced the release of Linux Mint 22.2 "Zara", an Ubuntu-based version which will receive updates through to 2029. The 22.2 release includes several new features, including new full screen options for the Hypnotix IPTV player, a version of the libAdwaita library to support themes, and artwork improvements. One of the big features is a fingerprint manager to providing authentication on computers which have a supported fingerprint reader. "Linux Mint 22.2 features a brand new XApp called Fingwit. This application is dedicated to fingerprint authentication. Fingwit detects if your computer has a fingerprint reader and lets you record your fingerprints. It then configures your system to use fingerprint authentication for: The screensaver, sudo commands, admin apps (pkexec). Note: If like most users you use home directory encryption or a keyring, the login screen still requires you to type a password. If you don't, you can configure Fingwit to also use fingerprint authentication in the login screen." Additional details are available in the project's what's new document. The AerynOS project has announced the release of AerynOS 2025.08, a new version of the project's independently-developed, rolling-release Linux distribution for general desktop use and with a custom package manager called "moss": "Closing out August 2025, we are proud to announce our third release of the year. This release follows an intense development period where the team has reevaluated its priorities and timelines, and refocused efforts on 'delivering core Linux distribution tooling that will simplify our ability to scale out over time'. We have documented some of our progress in our last two blog posts and spent the last two months further progressing towards these goals. We have implemented a basic version of virtual packages (Package Sets), continued our hardware (and VM) enablement efforts and have selectively been growing our repository where we feel it's beneficial to our users. What's new? Whilst not an exhaustive list, some of the top line repository updates include: GNOME 48.4, Plasma 6.4.4, Sway 1.11, Cosmic Alpha 7, Linux 6.15.11, Mesa 25.2.1, LLVM 20.1.8...." Sunil Vechalapu has announced the release of a major new update of FreedomBox, a Debian-based Linux distribution for private servers, with a web-based configuration utility. This is the project's first stable released based on Debian 13 "Trixie". (As the distribution's releases don't have version numbers, we took the liberty to use the date of the release as its version, so it's FreedomBox 2025-08-28.) "Debian 13 'Trixie' disk images now available. Debian made a new stable release 13 'Trixie' on August 9th, 2025. FreedomBox images with this release are now available. If you are making fresh installations, please use these images. Some notes: i386 architecture installations are no longer supported (by Debian and consequently FreedomBox); old installations should disable distribution upgrades; security updates will continue for a few more years; amd64 images now work with secure boot and only work with UEFI systems; iff you are using virtual machines or physical hardware, please enable UEFI booting; BIOS compatibility has been dropped." Here is the brief release announcement. Marco M. Mariani has announced the availability of a major update of MODICIA O.S., a Debian-based multimedia distribution designed primarily for musicians, graphic designers and video makers. This is the project's first build based on the recently-released Debian 13: "The new MODICIA O.S. 6.12.41, code-named 'Caravaggio', marks a remarkable leap forward in the Linux experience. Now based on Debian 13, this release not only inherits the stability and reliability of its solid foundation, but also introduces revolutionary changes that enhance every aspect of the system, making it faster, more stable and more functional than ever. Default mounting of tmpfs in RAM dramatically speeds up system operations such as installing or updating software. The Linux 6.12.41 real-time kernel ensures maximum responsiveness and perfect compatibility with next-generation hardware, including upcoming Intel CPUs and GPUs, Wi-Fi modules and storage controllers. The Cinnamon 6.4.10 desktop environment has been redesigned and reconfigured to offer a smoother, more modern macOS-style interface, with improved Wayland support and optimized window and multitasking management." Br OS is a Brazilian Linux distribution based on Debian and featuring the KDE Plasma desktop. The project's latest release, version 13.0, updates the desktop session from KDE Plasma 5 to version 6. It also migrates from using X11 by default to running a Wayland session, keeping X11 as a backup option. An English translation of the project's release announcement reads: "Once the previous version had validated the development method, we could focus on creating new features and remaking old features that had been temporarily left out due to the migration to Plasma 6, which broke every existing plugin, plasmoid and theme for KDE, and everything had to be redone. This version focused on making visual improvements, improving system automation and facilitating the installation of drivers, much that is done manually in Debian will be transparent to those who use Br OS, even ChatGPT on the desktop, a function that Br OS pioneered, is back! The Br OS 13 comes with Plasma 6.3.6; Qt 6.13; kernel 6.12.41; Wayland graphical server as main, and X.Org as alternative graphical server. Br OS brings the non-free repositories enabled, as well as native Flatpak support in the Discover app store via the Flathub repository." The CachyOS team has announced the release of the distribution's August snapshot. The new release adds an option to install the Niri window manager and automated Btrfs boot environments. "The installation medium (ISO) now also uses the LTS kernel instead of the latest stable kernel, since the ISO needs to boot reliably without graphics-related issues. Using the LTS kernel could cause future compatibility gaps - for example, when new AMD or Intel GPUs require a newer kernel. If needed, we'll consider bundling a second kernel in the ISO to ensure users with the latest hardware can boot and install smoothly. We've added a new desktop option to the online installer: Niri WM. We maintain a small set of dotfiles to provide a good out-of-the-box experience. Choosing the GRUB bootloader with Btrfs as the filesystem will now automatically enable bootable snapshots, matching the behavior we already provide with Limine. This improves user experience and stability in case a package update doesn't play nicely with your hardware." Additional information can be found in the project's release announcement.
