"Save as" file dialog no longer adds file extension

I download a lot of scientific articles as PDF files from the internet, and recently, the “PDF” extension is no longer added to the file names.

This used to be different.

It’s ok in Plasma because the files are being recognized as PDF files anyway, but it’s a bit cumbersome to always have to remember to manually add the file extension, especially when exchanging articles with colleagues etc.

Is this a configurable setting now or could I have encountered a bug?

Thanks.

In which circumstances, what is the browser, how was it installed, from which website, what the save as dialog is is it KDE’s even ?
Are other website concerned?

Generally filename for downloaded files are set by the website itself but there was some changes to KFilewidgets not long ago, so better make sure, this is not a regression.
First checking that’s KDE software is involved.

I think this is due to KDE’s file dialog no longer automatically adding the extension that corresponds to the current filter (in this case, PDF).

Here is an example. This is with the Vivaldi browser.

  1. This is me downloading a PDF file:

  2. I enter a new file name:

  3. The PDF extension is not automatically added:

It’s a similar problem when I save PDF attachments from e-mails within KMail. The difference here is that there is no *.pdf filter in the “Save as” dialog.

This all used to be different. Only recently do I find myself saving files without extensions all over the place.

It would be great if I could get the previous behavior back.

Seems like a regression, thank you for the detailed demonstration.

Can you share the list of extension/mime available in the filter field (if it is just *.pdf or there is also .).
With a screenshot for instance.
