Aaron Rodgers‘ time with the New York Jets has ended after two seasons.
The NFL team has informed the star quarterback that they will be moving “in a different direction” heading into the new season.
“Last week we met with Aaron and shared that our intention was to move in a different direction at quarterback,” Jets head coach Aaron Glenn and general manager Darren Mougey said in a joint statement.
The statement continued, “It was important to have this discussion now to provide clarity and enable each of us the proper time to plan for our respective futures. We want to thank him for the leadership, passion, and dedication he brought to the organization and wish him success moving forward.”

Rodgers joined the Jets in 2023 when the quarterback was acquired from the Green Bay Packers with a two-year $75M guaranteed contract. However, after four plays into the NFL season, Rodgers tore his Achilles and was out for the rest of the season.
Jets owner Woody Johnson had some kind words about the departing Rodgers, saying, “From day one, he embodied all that it meant to be a New York Jet, embraced our fans, and immersed himself in our city. That is what I will remember most when I look back at his time here. He will always be welcome, and I wish him only the best in whatever he chooses to do next.”
The 2024 season for the Jets saw many changes, including head coach Robert Saleh and general manager Jou Douglas getting fired midseason. Rodgers started 17 games in the last season with 3,897 yards and 28 touchdowns, which the Jets say was the third-best single-season total in franchise history.
Late in 2024, Rodgers hinted at possible retirement as he turned 41, telling Pat McAfee on ESPN, “When you’re 40 going on 41, you’re at the end of your career. There’s a lot of things, obviously, if it’s New York they have to want me to be here. If I can stay healthy the rest of the year and play the way I want to play, and everybody feels good about bringing me back, then there’s a decision there. At this point I am open to everything and attached to nothing.”
