  • July 8, 16.30-17.30 CEST: The working group "AI in humanitarian logistics" of the Logistics Hall of Fame will meet for an innovative seminar exploring how HeiGIT and Welthungerhilfe (WHH) are collaborating to develop free and open-source #ai tools that turn street-level imagery into actionable data for humanitarian logistics. Background: With vehicle-mounted cameras, every trip can become a data collection opportunity. Using machine learning and computer vision, HeiGIT extracts information about road surfaces, tunnel clearances, infrastructure constraints, and dirt-road passability under different weather conditions. The resulting datasets can support route planning, access assessments, and operational decision-making, giving humanitarian actors better situational awareness in areas where reliable infrastructure data is often limited.   Speakers are: Dr. Sukanya Randhawa, AI Lead for Good, HeiGIT Julian Psotta, Product Manager Smart Mobility, HeiGIT Ferdinand Seyffer, Spatial Data Scientist, HeiGIT #lhof #scm #humanitarianaid #disasterelief #logistics #routeplanning Photo credits flood in South Sudan: Welthungerhilfe

  • Many thanks to all humanitarian organizations that submitted successfully completed projects for the Lynn C. Fritz Medal for Humanitarian Logistics 2026 by the deadline. The medal is presented by the Logistics Hall of Fame, sponsored by Fritz Institute in California. All applications were reviewed by the members of the Expert Council and Thilo Jörgl, Chairperson of the Jury. During its annual online meeting, the Expert Council discussed the reviews and put together a shortlist for the jury. On June 23, the Expert Council's shortlist will be presented to the international jury for voting. The award ceremony will take place at HOFBURG Vienna on December 4. In 2025, Welthungerhilfe (WHH) won the medal for the projects „Emergency Supplies Prepositioning Strategy (ESUPS)“, which aims to improve national strategies for stockpiling relief supplies in disaster regions. #lhof #fritzmedal #logisticshalloffame #disasterrelief #humanitarianaid #supplychain #logistics #ngos

  • How can #AI and mathematical optimization help humanitarian organizations move from manual planning toward integrated, risk-aware, end-to-end supply chain optimization? During the 4th meeting of the virtual working group “AI in Humanitarian Logistics” of the Logistics Hall of Fame, Jose.M Shehata from the World Food Programme Innovation Accelerator presented WFP’s work on end-to-end supply chain optimization, showing how AI-enabled tools can strengthen supply chain planning. The presentation focused on a persistent operational challenge: WFP must plan across a complex global supply chain, from sourcing to final delivery, while #demand, access, #funding, prices, and lead times constantly shift. Yet critical data is often fragmented, and workflows remain Excel-heavy and manual, limiting teams’ ability to maintain a single, risk-aware view and re-plan quickly. To address this, the presentation introduced WFP’s End-to-End Integrated Supply Chain Optimization suite, built around four connected capabilities: demand forecasting, supply planning, operational planning, and operational design. The suite brings together three key tools: SCOUT, PRISMA, and Route The Meals. 1. SCOUT supports global and regional supply planning by helping teams understand what commodities are needed, where it is most efficient to buy them, when to purchase, and where to store them. 2. PRISMA acts as a risk-aware operational planning control tower, bringing together demand, pipeline, lead-time, access, funding, capacity, and shelf-life data into one view. 3. Route The Meals focuses on operational design and last-mile logistics, optimizing facility locations, food flows, dispatch planning, truck loads, routes, and delivery windows. Together, these three solutions show how AI and mathematical optimization can create measurable financial value by improving demand forecasting, sourcing decisions, #inventory planning, and route optimization. So far, the suite of solutions has delivered 12 million US dollars in cost efficiencies, helping WFP make every dollar go further and deliver more assistance to the people it serves. #logisticshalloffame #wfpinnovation #scm #ai #logistics #innovation #ngos #wfp Photo credits food kit air drop in Westmoreland, Jamaika: WFP
