#ICAO80 in Photos 📸 The First Session of ICAO Assembly was held in Montréal, Canada, from 6 to 27 May 1947. It brought together representatives from various countries to lay the groundwork for aviation standards, regulations, and cooperation among nations in the aftermath of World War II. What is the ICAO Assembly? The ICAO Assembly is the highest decision-making body of the International Civil Aviation Organization. It usually meets once every three years and is composed of representatives from all ICAO Member States. It serves as a forum for discussing key issues concerning international civil aviation, including safety, air navigation, environmental sustainability, and regulatory standards. Besides reviewing topical Working papers and major issues, Assemblies also elect the ICAO Council States and establish ICAO's budget and work programme for three-year periods. It does this by adopting Resolutions and by taking appropriate action on the reports of the Council and any matters reported to it by the Council. The 42nd Assembly will take place in the fall of 2025.

The delay in the commercialization of Gwadar International Airport has drawn significant criticism. Originally set for earlier operational status, the airport's opening has faced repeated postponements due to technical and logistical challenges, including delays in the delivery of equipment from China. The latest timeline suggests operations might begin by mid-2024. Despite its virtual inauguration in October 2024, concerns about the region's security situation and inadequate planning have impeded progress. Gwadar Airport, a flagship project under the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC), is a key piece of infrastructure intended to transform the region into an economic hub. However, these delays have raised concerns about the efficiency of project execution and the region's development trajectory​.

Emirates SkyCargo volumes up 18% in 2023-2024 🛫 Emirates SkyCargo reported a 18% rise in air cargo volumes for 2023-24 but reduced cargo revenue due to higher rates. The cargo division of Emirates carried a total of 2.2m tonnes of goods around the world in 2023-24, said Emirates Group in its annual report for the financial year April 1 2023 to March 21 2024. “Tonnages for both scheduled and freighter operations grew significantly (20% and 11% respectively). Demand was particularly strong for perishable goods from India, Pakistan and South Africa, primarily destined for Europe and the GCC countries,” said Emirates. However, the cargo division recorded revenue of $3.7bn during the period, a decrease of 21% compared to the 2022-2023 financial year. Cargo revenue contributed 11% to the airline’s total revenue. Cargo yield per Freight Tone Kilometer (FTKM) declined by 32%, returning to pre-pandemic marketplace levels. Though the impact of lower yields was “partly offset” by growth in volumes, said Emirates. “With the global supply chain returning to normality this year, there was a significant increase in cargo capacity worldwide which resulted in a downward pressure on prices,” noted the airline. Although increased market capacity impacted Emirates’ cargo revenue, the airline’s own increased capacity helped it serve air cargo demand. Emirates noted that “increased passenger operations expanded available cargo capacity, and the leasing of three 747 freighters during the year unlocked immediate capacity to serve demand on busy routes”. At the end of 2023-24, Emirates’ SkyCargo’s total freighter fleet stood at 11 Boeing 777Fs. During the period, Emirates SkyCargo secured three Boeing 747Fs on wet-lease to help meet air cargo demand while it awaits the delivery of four 777-200Fs in 2024 and one in 2025 The airline “deployed additional capacity into key markets such as Hong Kong, China, and Europe on the back of increasing customer demand”. Emirates also launched a new freighter route to Zumpango, Mexico, taking the total dedicated freighter destinations to 10. During the financial year, Emirates SkyCargo further launched Emirates Vital and Emirates Medical Devices, two purpose-built cargo solutions to serve the requirements of the life sciences and healthcare sector.  The business also launched e-commerce platform, Emirates Delivers in Kuwait to connect shoppers there with e-commerce brands in the UK, the US, and the UAE. The rapid transformation of Saudi Aviation looks set to transform the Middle East's aviation industry. The ripple effects will be felt much further out. Civil aviation contributed US$53 billion and 958,000 jobs to the Kingdom's economy according to an inaugural report on Saudi Arabia's aviation industry issued by GACA. The report was launched at an august gathering of the aviation industry's global who's who list - the Future Aviation Forum. Expect these figures to rise exponentially in the coming years with numerous high profile agreements for air transport services being signed with a host of countries including Kiribati, Grenada, Malawi, Romania, Belize, Kiribati, Sao Tome and Principe, Lithuania, El Salvador, Albania, Uzbekistan, Mozambique, Eswatini, Cambodia, and Brunei Darussalam. With Day 3 still to go. With US$100b worth of investments on offer, unsurprisingly, "the outcomes of the forum have exceeded all expectations." The forerunner to ICAO was the International Commission for Air Navigation (ICAN) The Convention on International Civil Aviation, also known as the 𝗖𝗵𝗶𝗰𝗮𝗴𝗼 𝗖𝗼𝗻𝘃𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻, in Chicago, was signed by 52 countries on 7 December 1944. Under its terms, a 𝗣𝗿𝗼𝘃𝗶𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻𝗮𝗹 𝗜𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗻𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝗮𝗹 𝗖𝗶𝘃𝗶𝗹 𝗔𝘃𝗶𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗢𝗿𝗴𝗮𝗻𝗶𝘇𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 (𝗣𝗜𝗖𝗔𝗢) was to be established, to be replaced in turn by a permanent organization when twenty-six countries ratified the convention. 𝗣𝗜𝗖𝗔𝗢 began operating on 𝟲 𝗝𝘂𝗻𝗲 𝟭𝟵𝟰𝟱, replacing 𝗜𝗖𝗔𝗡. The 26th country ratified the convention on 5 March 1947 and, consequently, PICAO was disestablished on 4 April 1947 and replaced by 𝗜𝗖𝗔𝗢, which began operations the same day. In October 1947, 𝗜𝗖𝗔𝗢 became an agency of the 𝗨𝗻𝗶𝘁𝗲𝗱 𝗡𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀 𝘂𝗻𝗱𝗲𝗿 𝗶𝘁𝘀 𝗘𝗰𝗼𝗻𝗼𝗺𝗶𝗰 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗦𝗼𝗰𝗶𝗮𝗹 𝗖𝗼𝘂𝗻𝗰𝗶𝗹 (𝗘𝗖𝗢𝗦𝗢𝗖).

Emirates has explained how its pilots reduce fuel and emissions during operations. Flying smarter and maintaining a strong focus on minimising fuel consumption and emissions starts in the cockpit. Emirates embarked on implementing “Green Operating Procedures” (‘Green Ops’) in 2016, taking a multi-pronged approach that looks for opportunities to reduce on-ground and in-flight fuel use, in addition to providing pilots with the necessary education, awareness, data analytics and technology to help them manage their flights as efficiently as possible. Led by an internal cross-functional Operations Efficiency Steering Group, the airline aims to mitigate unnecessary fuel burn and emissions wherever possible, while ensuring the highest safety standards embraced by Emirates are never compromised. In the last financial year 2023-2024, ‘Green Ops’ and other operating initiatives helped Emirates reduce fuel burn by more than 48,000 tonnes and carbon emissions by over 151,000 tonnes. Saudia Group orders 105 A320neo Family aircraft to support Saudi Arabia’s aviation goals Saudia Group, represented by Saudia, the national flag carrier of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, and flyadeal, the group’s low-cost carrier, has signed a firm order for an additional 105 A320neo Family aircraft. The order comprises 12 A320neo and 93 A321neo aircraft. This increases Saudia Group’s Airbus aircraft order backlog to 144 A320neo family aircraft. The agreement was announced at the Future Aviation Forum in Riyadh in the presence of H.E. Saleh bin Nasser AIJasser, Minister of Transport and Logistic Services of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, H.E. This multi-billion dollar deal, valued at over $15 billion, marks a pivotal moment for the Saudi Arabian startup airline as it prepares to launch commercial operations in 2025.
