You're juggling multiple cloud services. How do you avoid getting trapped in vendor lock-in?
Much has been said about avoiding vendor lock-in a multi-cloud environment. This might be needed e.g. with large companies for agility & cost-effectiveness reasons. One of our own customer use cases: You have you major cloud account on Z, with all your major tools etc. But for a large project (creating simulation results for ML training), cloud provider Y offers a more cost-effective solution. We used our Kubernetes-based simulation platform and OCI compliant High-Performance Containers which host the multi-physics simulation workload, let SUSE Ranger on Z reach out to Y and do the orchestration of all the spot compute clusters on Y. All the logistics is done in our home account on Z, all the computation is done on our guest account on Y.

Technical Computing Hub UberCloud Receives Funding from Earlybird
HPCwire
LOS ALTOS, Calif., and ISTANBUL, Turkey, Jan. 26 — Today, UberCloud, the Silicon Valley based hub in the cloud for engineers and scientists to discover, try, and buy computing on demand, announces the closing of its Pre-A $1.7 million round lead by Earlybird Venture Capital. Roland Manger, co-founder and partner of Earlybird, joins the UberCloud Board of Directors.

UberCloud Cites Progress in HPC Cloud Computing
HPCwire
After four years, 200 cloud experiments and 80 CAE case studies later, we are now able to measure cloud computing progress, quite objectively. Looking back four years at our first 50 cloud experiments, 26 of them failed or didn’t finish, and the average duration of the successful ones was about three months. Four years later, in 2016, looking at our last 50 cloud experiments, none failed; and the average duration of these experiments is now just about three days. This article summarizes major…

Towards Ubiquitous High Performance Computing - Passing HPC into the Hands of Every Engineer and Scientist
HPCwire
Our HPC community is well underway on its path to the democratization of HPC in CAE, Life Sciences, Finance, Oil & Gas, Media, etc. In this article we describe one of the major recent steps forward towards much wider acceptance and use of HPC, with new software container technology based on Docker and enhanced for HPC. UberCloud Containers are dramatically simplifying HPC software packaging and porting, ease the access and use of any software on any on-premise and remote computing resource, and…

Building a Marketplace for HPC in the Cloud for Engineers, Scientists and their Service Providers
HPC Today
Designing better quality products, shorten time to market, reducing product failure early in design, and increasing return on investment can be achieved by making high-performance computing (HPC) simulations part of the early phase of the product life cycle. Today engineers and scientists have access to three major computing tools for their simulations: workstations on their desk, in-house computing servers, and HPC cloud resources. All three options come with benefits and challenges. We will examine these benefits and challenges for manufacturers and scientists using HPC in the Cloud which complement in-house workstations and servers. We will also present UberCloud’s approach to take HPC to the masses – a highly sophisticated claim which sounded completely unrealistic when we started with UberCloud three years ago. But look and see how close we got in the meantime; today, it’s indeed better, faster, cheaper, with cloud computing.

Engineering simulation experiment in the cloud
NAFEMS Benchmark Magazine
It seems that “the cloud” has entered our vocabulary by the back door in recent years, much like many other buzzwords that come and go now and then. But this one appears to be here to stay, with many of us relying on cloud services in our day to day lives, both in and out of our jobs. But in terms of simulation and analysis, only a fraction of our work is currently done on the cloud, perhaps understandably given the resource and security requirements. The ‘UberCloud CAE Experiment’, discussed…

But in terms of simulation and analysis, only a fraction of our work is currently done on the cloud, perhaps understandably given the resource and security requirements. The ‘UberCloud CAE Experiment’, discussed on page 33 of this issue, is looking to change all that, by examining how we can access CAE in the cloud, and providing an online platform for engineers to discover, explore, and understand the end-to-end process of accessing and using CAE Clouds.

Workstations – Servers – Clouds – Comparing apples to apples - - A little decision-making support for the undecided
The UberCloud
A recent discussion in 25 HPC and CAE LinkedIn Groups about engineers’ concerns about cloud computing revealed that many engineers tend to compare the benefits of workstations versus in-house servers versus clouds in a somewhat misinformed way, picking the most positive aspects of their workstation with the (apparent, negative) roadblocks of the cloud. Forgive me: it’s almost like comparing your own bicycle with renting a Porsche. This article analyzes 14 potential roadblocks for engineers and…

Consider Computer Aided Engineering (CAE) in the Cloud
Desktop Engineering
Cost savings, shorter time to market, better quality, less product failures — the benefits that engineers and scientists can expect from using technical computing in their research, design and development processes can be huge. But relatively few scientists and manufacturers use servers when designing and developing their products on computers; the vast majority still performs virtual prototyping or large-scale data modeling on workstations or laptops.

How Cost Efficient is HPC in the Cloud? A Cost Model for In-House Versus In-Cloud High Performance Computing
The UberCloud
Based on fundamental findings from IDC that the cost of an HPC server amounts to only 10% of the Total Cost of Ownership (TCO) for this server over its three-year usage. This article analyzes and compares TCO for an in-house HPC server versus the same computing resource usage in the cloud. The optimum solution will obviously result in a hybrid in-house / cloud approach.
