The report calls for simplified regulatory frameworks and more accessible funding for companies across the value chain. 4. Recommendations: Proposals include setting up pilot plants for process validation, enhancing financial support to ensure competitive standing against the #USA and #Asia, and developing a skilled #workforce for battery production. 🚘 This year a slowdown in the growth of #electricvehicle sales has led to #battery producers in Europe and elsewhere scaling back or cancelling their plans to expand production capacity. Between January and May this year, 220 GWh of #gigafactory 2030 pipeline capacity has been cancelled or postponed, according to Benchmark’s Gigafactory Assessment. The company aims to reduce the number of magnets needed by 50%, decrease iron usage by 80%, save 50% in space, and cut production costs by 30%. These innovations could potentially increase range by 20% compared to current EV models or enable automakers to shrink batteries while maintaining the same range. DeepDrive is a German startup specializing in the development of innovative electric vehicle motors. With a recent funding of $33.5 million from its Series B round, the company aims to produce efficient, cost-effective dual rotor electric vehicle motors for major automakers. Led by tech venture capital fund Leitmotif, the investment also includes fresh capital from existing investors such as BMW i-Ventures and co-pace, the venture capital arms of BMW and major auto supplier Continental. DeepDrive's unique dual rotor design allows for better utilization of the rotor's magnetic field, reducing the number of magnets needed by about 50%, using 80% less iron, and taking up half the space while costing 30% less to manufacture. This innovation promises a 20% increase in range compared to current EV models or enables automakers to reduce battery size to achieve the same range. 💡 Why is it crucial to build up a local battery industry in Europe and North America?   In an interview with NYSE TV, Chief Financial Officer Kai Alexander Mueller underlined the relevance of battery technology in an EV world: “The important thing to understand is that 40 percent of the cost of electric vehicles are derived from the battery.” At the same time, the battery defines performance, range, charging time and safety. In a nutshell: the battery is one of the key technologies of the 21st century.   Today, about 95 percent of global battery demand is covered by Asian companies. PowerCo is one of the very few battery companies based in Europe and with gigafactories in Germany, Spain and Canada. The eMobility Excellence CPO-Benchmark Report 2024 by P3 Automotive provides a detailed analysis of Germany's high-power charging (HPC) infrastructure. This first edition evaluates 10 charge point operators (CPOs) based on network size, ad-hoc pricing, and charging point quality. These criteria were derived from a survey of over 450 electric vehicle (EV) drivers, ensuring the study reflects user priorities. >> EnBW leads in network size, operating over 4.400 HPC points across more than 1.000 locations. Their strategy of developing large HPC hubs at key traffic points has paid off, providing extensive coverage. EWE Go and Tesla follow, with EWE Go focusing on numerous sites with fewer points per location, and Tesla emphasising larger sites with more points per location. >> Tesla offers the most competitive ad-hoc pricing for non-Tesla drivers, at €0,54 per kWh. However, Tesla’s pricing varies by location and time. Fastned and IONITY also provide competitive rates at €0,69 per kWh. EnBW, despite its expansive network, has the highest ad-hoc price of €0,87 per kWh, including a time-based fee. >> IONITY leads in charging point quality, thanks to their high uptime and substantial maximum power output per connector. Fastned and EnBW also score high, showing robust performance across various technical parameters. Quality assessment criteria include uptime, incidence of problematic charging sessions, occupancy rates, and features like Plug & Charge or AutoCharge. >> Germany's public charging infrastructure has grown significantly. By early 2024, there were about 20.000 HPC points, with the top 10 CPOs covering over 13.700 of these. This expansion is essential as the number of battery-electric vehicles (BEVs) rose to over 1,4 million by the start of 2024. However, the end of EV subsidies in December 2023 led to fewer new registrations. >> Charging infrastructure growth has outpaced the increase in BEVs, with a 40% rise in HPC points. This trend towards higher charging capacities and shorter charging times supports long-distance travel and user convenience. More amenities at charging sites, like restrooms and shops, are becoming common, especially at Aral Pulse locations.
