𝙒𝙝𝙮? 💡Even though women make 50% of our population, only 2 out of 10 women found a company in Germany. 💰Only 2% of Venture Capital goes into female founded companies. 👩🏻‍💻Only 15% of senior partners in VC firms are women. 📑 In the Innovation Agenda of the Startup-Verband we set the objective that every third startup in Germany should have a female co-founder by 2030. It is only the first edition, but HLTH Europe has already established itself as the leading #HealthTech conference in Europe. Besides my 4 highlights, I also had the chance to moderate a panel on the topic "Last mile: Localising access for underserved areas" with 3 fantastic panelists: · Prathibha (President, Mayo Clinic Health System) · Minal (National Director of Primary Care and Community Transformation, NHS England) · Harmony (SVP, Chief Medical Officer & Head of Global Medical at ViiV Healthcare) PS: Amira (SVP Innovation at Siemens Healthineers): we missed you! Here are the key insights of the panel: Bringing healthcare #access to all, especially to underserved areas, has been a challenge since the inception of healthcare. With all the technology of our modern world, is #Healthcare access on the verge of being solved? The short answer is no. But there is hope. In the UK: ➝ There is a 15-year life expectancy gap between deprived areas, and wealthier neighbourhoods nearby. ➝ Funding struggles to keep up: In the next 15 years, a 37% increase in "ill-health costs" is expected, while the working population will increase by 4% over the same period. ➝ Increasing productivity is essential to solve the problem: A 1% decrease in productivity costs 1.5 billion pounds. In the US: ➝ The zip code is (still) a better determinant of health than the genetic code. ➝ Enabling access to underserved areas can also be seen as an opportunity rather than a problem. Tech adoption will be faster due to higher unmet needs, accelerating innovation that can later benefit well-served areas. Debunking one myth: ➝ For HiV, there is now a better access and coverage in Africa than in certain parts of developed countries (US and Europe). Pockets of innovation: ➝ To unlock HCP capacity, the NHS has a national program to move towards a modern General Practice, moving away from "first come first serve" to a new model based on population health and segmentation: the right care for the right person in the right way. First results show that 30% of GP appointments could be done via "messaging only" (instead of F2F visits), bringing massive efficiency gains. ➝ Mayo Clinic already has 75 specialties that are technology enabled, bringing the “Mayo medical care" in the rural areas via virtual and hybrid models, and also embedding the 50+ AI algorithms already active at Mayo. ➝ But increasing access is not only about Tech. Sometimes, it is about boldness: Viiv Healthcare, a pharma company specialised in HiV, gave the patent of its drugs away in 90+ underserved markets, enabling cheap and at-scale production. What does the future hold? Will someone living in an underserved area be able to visit the "Mayo Clinic in the metaverse with his / her digital twin?" The most valuable HealthTech companies in Germany are BEAT81 by Tim Dettmann and Urban Sports Club by Moritz Kreppel & Benjamin Roth. when we talk about healthTech. We often dismiss the companies with the highest impact and focus on the companies with fancy tech and low impact. We think tech is impressive. I believe changing people’s behaviour to the better is f* impressive! It’s damn hard. By now, I have been active in the cancer space for 15 years. I was 21 when I first attempted to synthetise a Drug Conjugate in a chemistry lab (and failed and cried :D). And what I learned during these years is that we can decrease the non communicative disease burden globally by over 50%, if we just get humanity to have a healthier lifestyle. But modern civilisation put the responsibility on the shoulders of the individual without offering them the opportunity to execute. Modern cities aren’t build to promote health and what BEAT81 & UrbanSports are doing is making a healthy lifestyle accessible to everyone. And whenever I am taking a HIIT class from great coaches, I can’t help but acknowledge that these two companies are impacting the health of thousands of people in Germany in ways no health guidelines or doctor advice has been able to do in the last century. And it’s damn awesome to live in a time where I can access such an awesome workout experiences for ar. $100 a month! 💬 Why I Love Talking About Health and Female Empowerment When it comes to #femalehealth, there’s so much we need to address, and it's not just about reproductive health. 1️⃣ Chronic pain conditions and issues like #acne are often seen as cosmetic / psychological problems, but the reality is much deeper. For generations, conditions like acne have been labeled as “beauty issues,” leaving many women feeling like something is wrong with them. But this dismissive view has resulted in a lack of medical research into skin health and how it impacts mental well-being. 🔍 Did you know that many skin conditions, like acne, are more common in women, yet they are often under-researched and treated as merely cosmetic? This perception has left countless women struggling with issues that affect their confidence, #mentalhealth, and overall #wellbeing. 💡 Instead of focusing on real solutions, the beauty industry often promotes unrealistic standards that make these conditions feel like personal failures rather than medical conditions in need of proper attention. ✨ That’s why I’m so passionate about driving these conversations. From #menstrualhealth to skin conditions, female health issues have been overlooked for far too long. We need more scientific research that goes beyond the surface and prioritizes women’s overall health. Yesterday I wondered once more: "Why am I a football fan and, of all teams, a member of VfL Bochum, a team that usually fights to avoid relegation?" Maybe it goes back to when I was 8 years old, won second place in a drawing competition, and got to walk onto the pitch with captain Darius Wosz at a game against Bayern Munich in front of 45 thousand people... Yesterday, I experienced another unforgettable moment. After a 0-3 home loss to Fortuna Düsseldorf, the odds were against us. Everything was set up in Düsseldorf for a huge party, Campino, lead singer of die Toten Hosen and a huge Düsseldorf fan himself said prior to the game that "it feels like Christmas and Easter on one day". But Bochum did the impossible: equalizing in the second leg, going into extra time, and finally winning in a penalty shootout - one of the biggest comebacks in German professional football history. Our goalkeeper Andreas Luthe ended his career as a hero. Chatting with colleagues over lunch today, I realized just how excited I still was by what happened. The game really showed how important mental strength and coaching are. These qualities matter just as much in the business world. There is certainly many more important things in this world than football. And yet, a sport like this connects and provides joy to so many people in such a unique way. This passion and dedication are mirrored in our professional challenges. Mental fitness and coaching can turn seemingly impossible situations into successes.
