We used QoO in a Vodafone trial earlier this year, plus I use it regularly to quantify performance during video conferences. I can testify that this new IETF approach directly correlates with my subjective experience of the application outcome. In this Gbps era of "enough speed", we need a better metric than the speed test, which is of diminishing value now. QoO is tailored per application/class and easily understood by customers. Roadmap to NTN The demand for mobility, ubiquitous coverage and resilience has driven Mobile communications in 5G and 6G to include Non Terrestrial Networks. NTN includes multi orbit satellites, High Altitude Platforms (HAPs) and Aerial devices in the lower troposphere. In 5G and 5G Advanced we are now seeing integrated service delivery via cellular and satellite direct to commercial mobile phones heralding further Sector convergence. This is enabled by new ETSI 3GPP 5G standards helping to create the new ecosystem. The 5G Advanced era will herald large constellations of LEO satellites with on board processing including network functions (previously only terrestrial), and now offering direct phone to phone connections with a reduced need for terrestrial infrastructure. As we now move into the period of defining a completely new and unified 6G system, NTN will play a key role in proving coverage and resilience via an interconnected 3D space network converged with terrestrial networks and growing capability of Positioning , Navigation and Timing (PNT) . Broadband QoE: 3 New Reports from TIP Back in 2006 I had the honour of being the Technical Chairman of the Broadband Forum (it was called the DSL Forum in those days). One of the key Technical Recommendations we published that year was TR-126 "Triple-play Services Quality of Experience (QoE) Requirements" (https://lnkd.in/eTFUUwVK). This was one of the first standards/fora documents to link service requirements to network performance metrics. This was the "triple-play" era of video + voice + data (Internet access) bundles. Video resolution was either SD or HD. TR-126 was a landmark document that covered factors such as the human perception of video quality as well as the QoE dimensions for online games and web-browsing. It sought to link the different service requirements to network parameters in terms of throughput, latency, jitter and packet loss.   In the ~20 years since TR-126 was published the broadband world has changed dramatically. DSL is being replaced by FTTH, Cable has moved to DOCSIS 3.1/DOCSIS 4.0 and so Gigabit broadband is relatively common in mature markets. Video streaming at 4k Ultra-HD, cloud gaming and interactive immersive experiences are all readily available. This places new demands on networks. We also have a richer toolkit to improve network performance measurement (such as Quality Attenuation - see BBF TR-452.1), improved scheduling (e.g. IETF's L4S) and linking network performance to application outcomes (e.g. IETF's Quality of Outcome metric - QoO). The work by CableLabs and CAMARA on Network as a Service KPI's (such as Quality on Demand - QoD) can also play a role in this space. Finally, there is huge potential for ML to add value here, by identifying the key network performance metrics and values that correlate with application KPIs.   The work published by TIP below looks at the link between application outcomes and network performance metrics in the modern era. This has never been more important, since simply marketing broadband at ever increasing speeds is producing diminishing returns in terms of customer perceived benefits. It is primarily the application outcome that determines the customer's QoE, not just the speed test result. I would like to thank my colleagues Mayur Channegowda and Kevin Smith for their contributions to this TIP work as well as the other contributors and Francois Blouin from Meta (who also worked on BBF TR-126 back in 2006).  This is a fantastic time to be working in Broadband. As #Telekom, we want to be a leader not only in quality, but also in #innovation. A good example of this is the large-scale battery storage systems that store surplus wind and solar energy and feed it into our network when required. Today, we are the first telecommunications company in the world to put such a large-scale storage system into operation in Münster, thereby taking on a pioneering role in the telco industry. Together with our subsidiary PASM Power & Air Solutions, we want to store a total of 300 MWh of energy by 2030. The Ericsson CTO Tech Trends is always a yearly highlight for me. For the last 10 years Ericsson has shared insights about what tech trends will be vital for the ICT Industry and beyond - over the years I have appreciated the foresight they have provided plus the rationale that supports each trend too. In every case since I have been reading them they either spark my curiosity to explore more about a specific trend or trigger a what if question... both are definitely positive experiences. O2 Telefonica lights up open RAN site in Germany: O2 Telefonica switched on its first virtualised RAN (vRAN) and open RAN commercial site in Germany to provide 4G and 5G services, with network supplier Samsung powering the deployment. Following lab tests, the two companies stated the commercial site is now live in Landsberg am Lech, Bavaria with plans to expand the vRAN and open RAN network to seven additional locations over the coming months. Mallik Rao, chief technology and information officer at Germany’s second largest operator., claimed open RAN is a building block that will help the operator automate its network, deploy new updates at a faster rate and utilise network components with more flexibility. For the initial launches, the vendor is supplying its O-RAN compliant radios, which include its 64T64R Massive MIMO radios, that support low-and-mid bands. The next step includes deploying Samsung’s network automation platform to control lifecycle management from deployment and operation to maintenance. The two companies first announced their collaboration in October 2023 ahead of the initial shipments three months ago of Samsung’s 4G and 5G kit and software. Over the past several years, Samsung has emerged as a 5G rival to leading equipment vendors Ericsson, Nokia, Huawei and ZTE. Among others, it has vRAN and open RAN network deals with Verizon and Vodafone Group. At the end of last year O2 Telefonica rival Deutsche Telekom (the country’s largest operator) revealed open RAN sites were operational in the German city of Neubrandenburg using equipment from partners Nokia and Fujitsu, with the operator targeting having more than 3,000 antenna locations compatible with the architecture by end-2026.
