⚡ Ammonia cracking: New catalyst produces double the hydrogen yield and also fertiliser 💧 A team of researchers from the University Alliance Ruhr has developed a ground-breaking catalyst that could take ammonia cracking to a new level. This catalyst converts ammonia into hydrogen and nitrite, which can be easily converted into fertiliser. This technology has never been used for this purpose before. ⚙️ The researchers combined the reverse Haber-Bosch reaction with a second electrolysis of water. Instead of nitrogen, nitrite is produced, which facilitates fertiliser production and doubles the hydrogen yield. 💡 Gas diffusion electrodes that can utilise gaseous ammonia were also used for the reaction. This is also a new process, as ammonia was previously always utilised in dissolved form. 👏 We at Hy2gen welcome these efforts, as we see renewable ammonia above all as a promising substance for more sustainable fertiliser production. https://lnkd.in/enXz59_9 Funding decisions for large electrolyzer and hydrogen industrial network in Hamburg Where the Moorburg power plant used to generate electricity from coal, a 100 MW electrolyzer will in future produce green hydrogen and use it to supply industrial plants south of the port. Yesterday, Monday, Federal Minister of Economics Robert Habeck and Hamburg's Senator for the Environment Jens Kerstan publicly presented the funding decisions from the federal and state governments for two projects: the Green Hydrogen Hub (HGHH) with a 100 MW electrolyzer and the hydrogen industrial network HH-WIN. The federal and state governments' funding for both projects totals 250 million euros. The HGHH electrolysis project and the HH-Win hydrogen industrial network in Hamburg are two of a total of 23 projects that, strictly speaking, received funding from the federal and state governments in July as part of the IPCEI funding. They belong to the third so-called Hy2Infra wave of the IPCEI Hydrogen. IPCEI stands for "Important Projects of Common European Interest". Projects with this designation may receive higher funding rates from member states than would normally be permitted under EU state aid rules. On February 15, 2024, the EU Commission recognized the 23 projects as IPCEI projects under state aid law. From coal-fired power plant to hydrogen hub The Green Hydrogen Hub is to be built on the site of the Moorburg coal-fired power plant. Hamburger Energiewerke acquired the Moorburg power plant in March 2023. The subsidiary Energie Hub Moorburg began dismantling the power plant in October 2023. Some of the rubble from the plant is to be reused directly on the site. Parts of the existing infrastructure and systems are also to continue to be used for the electrolyzer. These include, for example, the water treatment plant and the workshop and storage building. The HGHH consortium of Hamburger Energiewerke and Luxcara has also been working on the detailed planning of the electrolyzer since autumn 2023. After receiving the funding approval, the companies now want to award the contracts for the large components and the construction of the 100 MW electrolyzer this year. Construction is scheduled to begin in 2025. The production of green hydrogen will be gradually ramped up later. The consortium wants to supply hydrogen consumers from various industries. Negotiations are already underway with many companies to this end. In addition to the HH-WIN network, deliveries will also be made via a truck loading station. Construction of the hydrogen industry network in Hamburg has begun Construction work for the Hamburg hydrogen industry network (HH-WIN) has also already begun, and the first major pipeline sections are now underway. Among other things, a tunnel with a diameter of around 1.4 meters will cross the port railway and a dike.

🚨 News Alert! 🚨 BASF and AMG Graphit Kropfmühl GmbH have entered into an innovative renewable energy agreement. 🌿⚡ This means that: 🌱 BASF Renewable Energy will supply renewable energy certificates (“Guarantees of Origin”) to Graphit Kropfmühl’s production site in Hauzenberg, Germany. ✅ The Guarantees of Origin certify that a given amount of power comes from a particular renewable power plant, providing tangible proof of the usage and source of renewable power. ♻️ Graphit Kropfmühl´s product “graphite” will then be used by BASF as raw material for the production of Neopor®, reducing the carbon footprint along the value chain. Hydrogen & Offshore Wind: Challenges and Opportunities in Power Transmission Great discussions at the #HydrogenForum in Hamburg this year! ️ As engineering consultants, Jörss – Blunck – Ordemann | JBO is constantly looking ahead to support clients with future technologies. Hydrogen production offshore, alongside initiatives like Power-to-Hydrogen, has been a hot topic. However, a key challenge we see is the current emphasis on comparing power transmission to shore vs. hydrogen transport. The reality is the offshore industry's supply chain can't meet the rapid demand envisioned. Those massive HVDC platforms under development are a bottleneck. Here's an alternative: smaller platforms with partial power conversion to hydrogen.
