Difficult news from Germany yesterday, with Volkswagen announcing factory closures (for the first time ever in their 87-year history in Germany), as well as significant layoffs and pay reductions impacting all staff. The slowdown in EV adoption and fierce competition from Chinese manufacturers are the driving forces behind this move. Handelsblatt Exklusive: Following the software deal between Volkswagen and Rivian, the two car manufacturers are exploring further areas of partnership, several insiders from both companies told us. According to them, both a hardware cooperation and joint production are being discussed: 🚘 One scenario for an expanded #partnership involves Rivian's new #R2 SUV being produced at the VW plant currently under construction in South Carolina. SUVs and pick-ups from VW's new US EV brand Scout are to roll off the production line at this site from 2026. The R2 is due to be launched around the same time. The ideas are at an early stage and could be put aside again, the insiders said. How well the partnership between Rivian and VW gets off the ground in the critical #software area is likely to be of key importance. 🚦 A VW spokesperson declined to comment on speculation about an extended partnership. A Rivian spokesperson said: "There are currently no cooperation plans for the hardware sector." Last week, the German OEM and the US start-up announced the establishment of a new joint #venture in the software sector. Volkswagen is investing up to five billion dollars. The goal: use the start-up's expertise to develop an operating system for the next generation of EVs that is better than what CARIAD has to offer. ⚡ Further cooperation is likely to involve VW's new subsidiary Scout Motors Inc. VW is investing five billion dollars here: in the construction of the new plant and in the development of an independent platform. According to an insider, #OliverBlume told RJ Scaringe that VW does not know how to proceed with Scout. Its development would cost billions, despite the changed market environment. Accordingly, even a discontinuation of the Scout project had been discussed. 💡 In an interview with me, Scout CEO Scott Keogh contradicts this statement: "Oliver Blume is 100 percent behind our vision." Scout is bringing "an iconic brand back to life" with a "phenomenal product". The end of Scout has not been discussed, on the contrary: "The Group has made the decision to grow in #NorthAmerica, the largest economy in the world. In a recent interview, Mr. Albrecht Boettiger (Director of ADAS at Porsche Engineering) & Mr Juergen Bortolazzi (Director of ADAS & AD at Porsche AG) discussed the current state of technology and the future of driving. Their insights shed light on the serious commitment of top automakers to develop AD capabilities and prepare for a future where AD becomes an integral part of every vehicle, with safety and simplified technology sophistication being the key differentiators. Among the points discussed, two statements by Mr. Boettiger stood out to me as particularly aligned with our work at Minus Zero: (i) "We moved from level 1 to level 2 rather quickly, for example from simple longitudinal control to combined longitudinal and lateral control. The leap to level 3, however, is taking more time..." (ii) "The use of AI is increasingly indispensable, particularly in the field of environment perception and data-driven development..." At Minus Zero, we understand the complexity of the evolution journey from L2 (ADAS) to L2+, L3, & eventually to L4 and the crucial role that AI plays in enabling the advancement of '𝐀𝐮𝐭𝐨𝐧𝐨𝐦𝐲 𝐛𝐞𝐲𝐨𝐧𝐝 𝐀𝐃𝐀𝐒'. BYD has completed the acquisition of its German distribution partner. This vertical integration is part of BYD’s strategy to rapidly build market share. The company aims to secure 5% market share in Europe by 2026. It currently holds about 0.1%. At the same time, the company is powering forward with investments globally to build facilities in many other countries to locally manufacture for local markets. According to a recent report in Forbes, BYD is targeting for about 50% of its sales globally to be delivered by its manufacturing facilities across many nations. "🚗 Automation Level – The 5 Steps to a Self-Driving Vehicle 🚘 Level 0 – No automation: The driver has complete control over all aspects of driving. 👣 Level 1 – Feet off: Semi-automated systems such as cruise control or lane departure warning support the driver in individual tasks, but the driver remains active at the wheel and must be able to intervene at any time. 🙌 Level 2 – Hands off: The vehicle can control multiple driving functions at the same time (e.g., accelerating, braking, and steering), but the driver still needs to monitor the environment and be ready to intervene. 👀 Level 3 – Eyes off: Here, the vehicle takes complete control of the driving under certain conditions, but the driver must be able to intervene if the system requests it. 🤯 Level 4 – Brain gone: The vehicle can drive fully automatically in certain environments without the intervention of an operator. The "driver" becomes a passenger. 🤖 Level 5 – Full Automation: This is the ultimate goal! The vehicle can drive autonomously at any time and in all conditions. It masters all tasks independently, but has neither a steering wheel nor pedals, depending on the case. "
