BMW's global vehicle sales for the first six months of 2024 have been published by #BMWBlog. As the analysis on the left of the picture shows, by using adoption of the curved display for each model type as a proxy for #driver #monitoring #system fitment, we can approximate #DMS units at BMW Group. For the 2025 model year, only the 8-Series, #X4 and #Z4 are judged to not feature the curved display, with the M5 having been withdrawn. The exact start of production date for each model upgraded to the curved display for the 2025 model year is unknown, but BMW looks to be on course to hit 500,000 vehicles a quarter with DMS during this calendar year, and may reach that milestone as early as the July-September (current) quarter. We will know more next week when Seeing Machines publishes numbers for quarterly cars on road for the three months covering April-June. Smart Eye releases its financial results the week after, but it has never published quarterly cars on road data. BMW is judged to have dropped Smart Eye as its DMS supplier and moved to Seeing Machines DMS for the Gen2 product. BMW has standardized on DMS integration within the instrument cluster, and is assumed to be using a #cockpit #domain #controller running Operating System 8/8.5/9 on the third-generation Qualcomm cockpit #applicationsprocessor. Change is coming in 2025, with the introduction of the BMW #NeueKlasse platform which will run Operating System 10 in the cockpit. The Neue Klasse will feature BMW #PanoramicVision, and a 3D head-up display #HUD. The tier-1 is assumed to be Valeo, with Seeing Machines set to continue as the DMS provider going into the third-generation product. The May 2024 edition of Semicast's market report "ADAS & Automotive Vision-based Driver Monitoring Systems" is available for purchase. Significant segmentation of the DMS/OMS market is provided. This is summarized as follows: - by movement detection into "Owl-only" and "Owl & Lizard" detection - by feature set - by processor type - by CMOS image sensor location - by CMOS image sensor resolution - by driver and occupant monitoring - by front-seat and whole-cabin monitoring Message me for a copy of the sales brochure and sample pages for the study. Whenever we talk about hot new models from automotive OEMs, we're often actually talking about tier one suppliers. Car brands are great at design, testing and assembly, but largely rely on mega suppliers to make the constituent parts. No shortage of cars out there with a Bosch ESP module, ZF transmission and Continental tyres... There aren't too many surprises in this Automotive News list of the biggest of the lot. Three observations: 1. Germany remains a superpower with engineering and brand equity to die for, but can't afford to be complacent. Ever. 2. As #EVs take over, expect more Chinese players beyond CATL to storm up the charts. E.g. you would expect BYD to be up there soon, since its batteries are used by Toyota, Kia and others. 3. On the topic of vertical integration, it's clearly a real advantage that Hyundai and Kia have priority access to Mobis like that... Bosch ZF Group Cox Automotive Australia

Advances in ADAS Feature Development: Corner-Case Detection System CARIAD and Porsche Engineering are collaborating on a project to further develop Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS). A core element of this project is the corner-case detection system , which aims to automatically recognize, highlight, and extract rare test scenarios, also known as "corner cases." The automatic analysis of extensive datasets simplifies the work of engineers, as they no longer have to select and analyze each scenario manually. Instead, they can now focus on the scenarios that are most relevant for improving the assistance systems. The corner-case detection system will also support the planning of test drives and endurance-run-campaigns in the future by providing recommendations for countries to visit and the amount of data necessary for being representative during these campaigns. This targeted data collection maximizes the efficiency of data collection and further advances the development of ADAS technologies. When using the proposed corner-case detection system, the incoming data volume could be reduced by up to 90 %. The German Automakers have officially been Disrupted by Technology, Electrification of Powertrain and Battery System. In 1997, Toyota launched their Prius Hybrid with Electrification Technology, in search with Sustaining Innovation to extending their Internal Combustion Engine manufacturing and vehicle platform - Toyota succeeded after 25-years of investment. Unfortunately, the Germans' Senior Management needed to meet KPI as revenue generation with profitability; derived "short-term" goals, including outsourcing new capabilities into China. Interestingly, VW had done very well in China of a few decades, one of the most favorite foreign Vehicle Brands there; yet, the Chinese-made is now "eating" VW's European Market. The Germans didn't consider what will be the new "Engine" if the scenario when Electrification Transition happens; unlike Toyota, they developed their own Battery Technology and ready to mass produce thru 2028. This is done across 30-years as Kaizen since Toyota Prius was first introduced. At this moment of my writing, the German Automakers have nothing of their own, except to depend on their Chinese suppliers as Battery System Supply-Chain Operations. Ironically, the European Union 🇪🇺 imposed tariffs on Chinese-made EV, therefore, even VW would to import their own EV Made in China, customers there will find theirs still more expensive than Chinese brands; they are faced with this bureaucracy. Mercedes-Benz, Maybach, BMW and Audi can continue to go high-market to price their cars, with limited Hybrid performance; especially, Singaporeans can afford, but our market is very small. Moving forward, the German Automakers have a few years, perhaps thru 2030, to develop Hybrid and EV platforms as key Technology Systems for Sustaining Innovation. Thereafter, in hope to keeping their marketshare; but they likely won't be able to prevent the shrinking sales in the coming years. My prediction, VW won't survive as a "whole", while they will have to consolidate their brands and global operations by using Efficiency Innovation to cut cost; invest with paranoia into Sustaining Innovation. The German Automakers will be an excellent example as new addition into the textbooks and lecture notes on Disruptive Innovation Theory from the Technology Management Science and Strategy.
