Japan protested a Russian military plane's airspace violation on September 23 near Hokkaido, which led the Japanese Air Self-Defense Force to deploy fighter jets that fired warning flares for the first time. Prime Minister Fumio Kishida, at the U.N. General Assembly, called the breach "extremely regrettable," confirming that the Russian aircraft intruded into Japanese airspace three times over Rebun Island. Kishida emphasized Japan's commitment to protecting its territory and vowed a firm response in accordance with international and domestic laws. He directed ongoing vigilance and surveillance, reiterating Japan's dedication to securing its land, sea, and airspace while maintaining dialogue with relevant nations.
