Space Safety Industry Days at ESOC/ESA in Darmstadt, 28.11.2024. It felt like a family meeting, a quickly growing family... In my opinion, within ESA's Space Safety Program (#S2P) are one of the most useful/helpful missions - for mindkind (warning and protection from asteroids, e.g. #HERA, #RAMSES) - for the resilience of its economy and defence capabilities (non-dependent warning from hazardous sun outbursts which could damage or infrastructure in Earth and in space, e.g. #VIGIL) - all around #SpaceDebris (mitigation, removal, space traffic management, up to in-orbit measurement of small debris particles <1mm, e.g. via #SAILOR) and others within the #COSMIC program, - including managing its measures complying -> to the ESA regulation "maximum 5 years deorbit time" and -> to the - meanwhile international - #ZeroDebrisCharter. Not respecting the space debris issue means soon "GAME OVER" for us space industry and for mankind by no more daily use of space infrastructure. For the next CMin2025 a total budget of - in my view - 1 billion Euro for 3 years (should be 5-7% of total) would be well invested money...for European sovereignty and global mankind. Thank you very much, dear ESA Space Safety Office within the ESA Operations, Engineering & Space Safety Directorate for this very efficient event.

The Munich-based Defence start-up ARX Robotics has introduced an AI tool called ARX Mithra OS, with which already imported military vehicles can be transformed into unmanned ground systems (UGV). According to the manufacturer, the Legacy Autonomy Kit, which runs on the basis of the ARX Mithra OS, allows the retrofitting of a large number of already introduced military vehicles. At AERO Drones in Friedrichshafen, a separate focus area up to and including Friday (19.04.), embedded into the AERO Friedrichshafen aviation trade show, everything is centered around #drones in public safety operations. UAV DACH is represented on site by board members Markus Rossol, Michael Wieland and Jan Schönberg. In line with the philosophy to "Inform | Network | Shape", they will be available as contacts for technical questions relating to commercial #UAS operations in general and the Association for #Unmanned #Aviation in particular and will be actively involved in the extensive conference program in Hall A2. This year's AERO Drones will once again be a meeting place for a wide variety of stakeholders from the drone economy. Current and future challenges for the UAS industry will be the subject of lively discussions in the aisles, in panel discussions and at the exhibitors' stands. The common interest: Finding solutions to the industry's most pressing problems in order to jointly shape a successful future for unmanned aviation.

Lilium, the German-based eVTOL jet developer, has partnered with GE Aerospace to establish a robust safety framework for the emerging green aviation sector. This collaboration combines Lilium’s fleet-wide flight data with GE’s Event Measurement System (EMS) platform to create scalable flight data management solutions. #Germany's ERC System revealed an eVTOL specifically intended for patient and casualty transport this week after coming out of stealth. Just to refresh your memory: A completely electric aircraft that can perform vertical takeoffs and landings is known as an eVTOL (electric Vertical Takeoff and Landing) aircraft. ERC, which was established in 2020, is working to fill a significant worldwide patient transport gap by creating a medical eVTOL. Every year, over 82 million critically ill and injured people in the USA and Europe require immediate medical transportation. However, the fastest accessible mode of transportation, helicopters, can only carry approximately 1.5 million of these patients. A group headed by Prof. Dr. Peter Biberthaler, Director of the Clinic and Polyclinic for Trauma Surgery at the Klinikumrechts der Isar of the #Technical University of #Munich, is the primary medical development partner of ERC. Munich-based electric air taxi startup Lilium, which recently shut down operations and laid off 1,000 employees, is now set to restructure with new investor support. Lilium, which raised over $1B before going public, has secured backing from a group of European and North American investors. These investors have agreed to acquire two of it’s subsidiaries, allowing the company to restructure and exit insolvency. it has signed an agreement with Mobile Uplift Corporation GmbH to sell its operating assets, which could help the company re-enter the eVTOL market. It expects the asset purchase agreement to provide its subsidiaries with the funding needed to restart operations, once certain conditions are met. The proceeds from the sale will be used according to German Insolvency Law, with no funds going to Lilium N.V. After my last post about Decision-level code coverage for #Rust I thought it is worth explaining why, unlike our regular tools, our "Zero" tools don't currently support MC/DC-level analysis for #DO178 DAL A / #ISO26262 ASIL D projects. For context, RapiCoverZero uses a branch trace to produce coverage metrics at the object code level. There’s no need for either source code or instrumentation. Hence it can support any compiled language, including Rust. MC/DC - "Modified Condition/Decision Coverage" - is defined in terms of source code level constructs such as conditions and decisions. These don't directly exist in the object code as it only contains branch statements. Object level code coverage can thus only tell you which branches were or were not covered. In order to infer MC/DC coverage from branch coverage you would need a way of mapping branch statements back to conditions/decisions in the source code. This might be possible in some circumstances but is not possible in the general case using off the shelf compilers, which try to remove branch statements where possible as they are bad for performance (branch misprediction can cause an entire pipeline to be invalidated). For example, consider the following source code, which returns the value of bit n in the input value: int check_bit_is_set(int value, int n) { if (value & (0x1 << n))      return 1;    else      return 0; } It contains a decision which means MC/DC is required (even though there is only one condition). Using the GCC compiler for Arm at optimisation level 1 this compiles down to a series of instructions with no branches: check_bit_is_set(int, int):     asrs   r0, r0, r1     and   r0, r0, #1     bx    lr It is thus impossible to infer MC/DC coverage of the source code from branch coverage in this case. Yesterday, Dr. Gerald Wissel and Michael Wieland met –  together with Dr. Stefan Berndes and Sentiana Schwerin from BDLI - Dr. Wilhelm Eschweiler, who was appointed Head of the Aviation Department at the Federal Ministry for Digital and Transport Affairs at the beginning of May, in Bonn, Germany. During an in-depth personal meeting, the two UAV DACH board members explained the #UAS industry's requirements for an enabling regulatory framework for the commercial use of #unmanned aerial systems and the need to promote this at European and international level.   It was agreed that the constructive and trustful dialog between the BMDV and the Association for Unmanned Aviation should not only be continued, but even expanded and intensified for the benefit of the developing #drone economy. Particularly in view of current regulatory projects in the area of U-Space and Advanced Air Mobility, the close exchange between industry and the Ministry of Transport is of crucial importance for the further development of Germany as an attractive drone industry location   With this in mind, the Federal Ministry of Transport and UAV DACH also want to join forces with other national and international partners, such as the German Aerospace Industries Association, in order to contribute to the further positive development of the European drone economy with broad-based funding measures and support initiatives.

Let me share my perspective as someone who has witnessed similar scenarios multiple times: The European innovation ecosystem often follows a peculiar cycle: 1. A startup emerges with ambitious, sometimes overreaching goals 2. Initial excitement and funding flow in 3. Technical challenges arise 4. Instead of pivoting or adapting, companies often persist with their original vision 5. Eventually, financial struggles lead to collapse 6. The talent disperses, enriching the ecosystem But here's the critical point that many miss: These "failures" aren't really failures at all. They're more like expensive R&D programs that: - Push technological boundaries - Train highly skilled professionals - Create valuable intellectual property - Build deep industry knowledge - Develop new supply chains - Challenge regulatory frameworks The real issue isn't with the collapse of companies like Lilium - that's part of innovation. The problem lies in how Europe often struggles to capitalize on these "productive failures." While in places like Silicon Valley, the ecosystem quickly absorbs and rebuilds from such setbacks, in Europe we often see: - Talent moving to established players instead of starting new ventures - IP getting locked away instead of being recycled into new projects - Risk aversion increasing instead of learning from mistakes - Public funding becoming more conservative instead of more targeted The question isn't whether Lilium (or any other innovative startup) will survive - it's whether we in Europe can learn to better harvest the seeds of innovation that these "failures" scatter.
