Proud to be one of the first believers with Climate Founders in kolum.earth! Carbon pricing like the European Trading System (EU-ETS) and supply chain pressure are in my opinion the two most powerful approaches for decarbonization. Cross boarder adjustment mechanisms (CBAMs) are the link to combine those approaches. The limitations of the EU-ETS are the regional limitation, that just a few industries are involved and the prices are not high enough yet. CBAM solves the first limitation in my opinion entirely, as it includes all suppliers from Non-European countries into the system. This is a huge step und creates pressure in the supply chain. Last year I was looking for a startup working in this field, as I believe it sits in a very important position in the supply chains of carbon heavy industries and can enable many other impactful solutions. Very glad that Helge Wieggrefe and Marius Sprenger decided to join our Climate Founders program and start Kolum. With their speed and know-how they instantly convinced me to be the best team in this space. Let‘s rock this together! Is the retail giant REWE Group building Germany’s first food-superapp? 🛒📲 Rewe has always been a pioneer in digital offers and now expands its portfolio with investments and partnerships. Last month alone, 2 deals hit the news: 1️⃣ Rewe participated in Flink's new funding round of 150$mn valued at ~900$mn (down about 70% since its peak valuation). With this cash injection, Flink plans to break even in Q2 2025, apparently having reached operational profitability in selected markets already today. Also they plan to open 30 additional warehouses. 2️⃣ Lieferando and Rewe announced a partnership, providing access to 3000 SKUs of Rewe’s assortment via Lieferando’s app, delivered by Lieferando’s courier network. “Rewe Express” promises delivery times of 45 minutes, closing the gap between Rewe’s scheduled delivery and Flink’s ultrafast delivery. With the new offers, Rewe now ticks many boxes that I expect from a food-superapp, combining all things food, and beyond: ✅ Brick and mortar stores ✅ Click and collect ✅ Scheduled delivery ✅ Quick-commerce (via Flink and Lieferando) ✅ Offer promotions in app  ✅ Digital travel agency  ❌ The only piece missing is food delivery. Did you know that the Russian chains X5 and Magnit are also at the frontier of supermarket tech? ➡️ Magnit has integrated AI to monitor inventory at shelf level, ensuring products (including 5000 pharmacy SKUs) are always available for their 30 minute delivery & click and collect. ➡️ Meanwhile, X5 Group deploys smart shopping carts, automatically scanning products for a frictionless checkout. The pace of change is accelerating, and only those who can adapt will thrive. Here are my six predictions for what’s ahead: 1️⃣ Political change in Germany: A double-edged sword The upcoming elections could reshape the cannabis landscape. A CDU/CSU-led government may attempt to roll back recreational cannabis policies, which would be a huge setback for the broader market. However, the medical cannabis sector is likely to remain stable, highlighting its importance for patient care and the health industry. 2️⃣ Putting patients first The industry is moving beyond merely selling products. Patients expect better outcomes, and companies that integrate telemedicine, digital tools, and personalized care will rise to the top. It’s not just about offering cannabis; it’s about improving lives through tailored solutions. 3️⃣ Data and BI: Thriving in oversupply Oversupply will be a first for Germany’s medical cannabis market. Companies must use data and business intelligence to navigate pricing pressures and identify the most promising opportunities. Quick adaptation will be key to staying competitive. 4️⃣ Growth at home and abroad Germany’s market is projected to grow from 70 tons in 2024 to 120 tons in 2025 - a massive leap. Simultaneously, markets in the UK, Poland, and the Czech Republic are expanding rapidly. Companies capable of scaling both domestically and internationally will dominate this next phase of growth. 5️⃣ Market consolidation: Only the strong will survive Fragmentation is ending. In 2025, national mergers and acquisitions by international players will intensify. Smaller companies will face increasing pressure, while professional, resourceful businesses with the ability to expand and scale will stay ahead. 6️⃣ Medical cannabis goes mainstream In 2025, medical cannabis will transition from niche to mainstream in Europe, becoming an integral part of standard care. Companies must focus on educating healthcare providers, delivering proven outcomes, and integrating seamlessly into healthcare systems to succeed. 2025 is the year for bold moves. Three biggest learnings from a fundraising journey. Shared by Rainer Märkle, General Partner at HV Capital at EUVC 1/ Have a time box with a deadline attached. Have a defined horizon & create a clear plan. Have some urgency to get things done at some point. Execute very transparently and reliably. 2/ Stick to your narrative. But don't do it blindly. Tweak it when necessary. Adapt it. Don't let yourself be surprised by major changes. Keep focusing on delivering according to your strategy & plan. 3/ Fundraising is a marathon with many sprints. There are moments when you'll ask yourself - Why do I do this? Is it gonna work out? But don't get too negative during the down phases. Adapting and pivoting is part of our job. Honoured to be featured in the latest Tech Funding News article discussing Germany’s role as a leading tech hub. 🚀 I’m also proud to see standout companies from the Earlybird Venture Capital portfolio—N26, Marvel Fusion, Isar Aerospace, and others—highlighted alongside my alma mater, Technical University of Munich, which is another key driver of innovation in the country. While Germany is often dubbed the ‘Silicon Valley of Europe,’ there’s still much to do, such as overcoming regulatory challenges and channeling more growth funding into promising startups. What's Food as Medicine? On Monday, at Food Ingredients Europe, I was part of a panel on "unpacking food as medicine". Here are my thoughts on the topic after our discussion: 1️⃣ The definition and the scope are not yet clear: even the name "food as medicine" creates a debate, which is a clear sign that we are still in the early days. In my opinion, we are talking about food being used to: - improve existing health conditions - prevent eventual diseases (directly linked to food, such as diabetes, or non-related to food, such as inflammatory diseases). - increase our healthspan 2️⃣ There is a strong debate on whether we should aim to change consumer behaviours through incentives (eat more fruits, legumes, ...) or if we should "change the Oreos" (make processed foods healthier bit by bit, often without telling the consumer). I am definitely convinced that the second path is more realistic. 3️⃣ Food as medicine is an answer to some of the biggest challenges that the food industry is facing: an ageing population + the growth of private labels. By creating products that have more value, food companies can create differentiation and eventually think about blending them with services. 4️⃣ GLP-1 is changing a booster for food as medicine: it is making more food companies consider the link between health and food in a very different light when they see their sales decline.
