Ad-tech made in Europe 🌍 A major step forward in the ad-tech partnership between RTL Deutschland and ProSiebenSat.1 Media SE has been achieved: Virtual Minds’ Media Manager has been integrated into RTL Deutschland’s TV playout system, meaning Ad Alliance can now offer programmatic linear TV advertising. Frank Vogel, Managing Director of Ad Alliance, says: “Establishing programmatic linear TV is essential for the cross-genre future, so that video inventory can be booked in a truly holistic way and from a single provider. How are video content, consumption and consumers evolving, and what will the video experiences of the future look like? My colleague Sebastian Schwarz covered this topic in a recent event in Germany, and here are some of his key takeaways: 1. Streaming services are almost at full saturation, with over 90% of all US households subscribing to at least one. 2. The vast majority of video content is being consumed on mobile devices, and short-form video content received 2.5 times more engagement than long-form. 3. Some pretty serious shots being fired in today's clash over peering between Meta and Deutsche Telekom! Meta says its direct peering relationship with DT should be free - they create the content that DT's customers pay to access. You scratch our back, we scratch yours, right? The company says it has this form of reciprocal 'no cost' relationships with 'thousands of telecom providers'. Meta: - "Deutsche Telekom is putting the open internet at risk and undermining net neutrality principles. It is using its market power to put its subscribers in Germany behind a de facto paywall, potentially restricting their access to internet services that do not pay Deutsche Telekom." (https://lnkd.in/ej-Xf6M5) But DT says this is just Meta throwing its weight around. It says Meta used to pay for direct peering services until the pandemic, when it abruptly ceased payments. DT filed a lawsuit, which has since been upheld in a German court, claiming Meta is trying to avoid paying up. DT: "Meta is once again abusing its overwhelming bargaining power to discredit legitimate concerns of the European telecommunications industry and consumers in order to avoid fair payment. This is not just about a difference of opinion between two companies, but about the question of whether the power of the strongest prevails on the Internet or whether there is a fair balance between all participants." - Meta is trying to avoid taxes in Europe  - Meta disregards European data protection (see WhatsApp) - Meta is trying to force its users into payment models in violation of - consumer protection laws - Meta lies to the public about hate speech  - Meta gave data to Cambridge Analytica and thus indirectly influenced elections (https://lnkd.in/eqqES78z) Spicy stuff!

Are you "streaming from the cloud" or old-school on-prem HW? Next month, I will participate in an exciting panel at the Dataxis event in London. Over the last few years, there has been ongoing discussion about whether telcos / large-scale broadcasters should keep streaming from their data centers or “move to the cloud.”  #Akamai #Google #AWS were always there, and #fastly and #cdn77 are also joined, but different customers have different needs. Telco’s, in particular, face unique challenges. Their focus on linear content results in a significant monthly throughput, and their CDN usage is substantial. This high demand for data usage presents a compelling argument for streaming from their own data centers. Broadcaster – as long as the scale is reasonable, it might fly for them, but it doesn’t make sense for the big players. Large broadcasters, such as #NFX and #Disney, have taken a different approach. They have either established their own CDNs worldwide or are in the process of doing so. This individualized solution reflects the unique needs and capabilities of these industry giants. Some people previously said we are all going to the cloud but waiting for the prices to go down. Prices went down, but the CDN providers are currently fighting with costs, and we may be at the bottom. So, WDYT, will the public CDNs take over? Are you familiar with large-scale TV providers that use them as their main CDN providers? Or will the "big ones" stay with their own HW on-prem?
