As we reflect on 2024, we’re grateful for all the impactful achievements in another year marked by global challenges. Continued wars, rising far-right movements, and deepening divides highlight the need for further unity and resilience, reminding us of the strength found in collaboration and productive debates. We want to say a big thank you to all the young people, partners, and supporters who worked with us throughout the year, helping to shape a more just inclusive Europe. Some highlights from the past year: 🔵 Understanding Europe: The European Summer School on Depolarisation and the exhibition “Young Perspectives on Social Injustices in Europe.” 🔵 European Youth Parliament (EYP): The 100th International Session in Thessaloniki, the Local European Youth Event in Berlin, and the Rebuild Ukraine Ambassadors project. 🔵 Junge Islam Konferenz: CONNECTING MINDS Festival and the JIK Talks addressing alliances against far-right movements; Narrative Change Academy Roundtable and Jewish-Muslim alliances workshops. 🔵 Postmigrant Europe: travel grants for 20 young Europeans to explore the continent 🔵 Beyond a Single Story: A series of online talks 🔵 Beyond a Single Story & Junge Islam Konferenz: Conclusion of 5 years' work in the Competence Network for Living Together in Migration Societies including conferences, roundtables and publications, model projects and empowerment formats, on migration society, youth political participation and civic education We also celebrated moments like honouring Sviatlana Tsikhanouskaya with the Schwarzkopf Europe Award, Munira Mohamud our Young European of the Year 2024 and hosting the European Youth Congress ahead of the EU elections. Looking ahead to 2025, we’re excited to kick off new initiatives like the Young European Security Conference in February, a news fellowship of Understanding Europe and upcoming EYP International Sessions in The Hague, Turku, and Málaga, among many others! 𝗬𝗲𝘀, 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗻𝗴 𝗽𝗲𝗼𝗽𝗹𝗲 𝗗𝗢 𝗰𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝗮𝗯𝗼𝘂𝘁 𝘀𝗲𝗰𝘂𝗿𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝗽𝗼𝗹𝗶𝗰𝘆! In a world where security challenges are evolving rapidly, if not daily, young voices are more important than ever. This is why, from February 27 to 28, we brought together almost 200 young people from 31 countries in Berlin for the Young Europe Security Conference (YESC)—a new educational initiative, which we launched together with the Gemeinnützige Hertie-Stiftung this year. #YESC2025 kicked off with a keynote speech by Prof. Marina Henke and a panel discussion. Then, participants engaged in eight Working Groups tackling some of the most pressing issues of our time: transatlantic relations, the war in Ukraine and in other countries, climate and technological security, the strengthening of democracy and resilience. The groups were guided by young trainers from our youth networks European Youth Parliament (EYP) and #UnderstandingEurope as well as by students from Hertie School. On top, they attended workshops with established experts from academia, politics and civil society. The main conference topics were also featured in our four panel discussions: “Rethinking Security in the Face of Global Security Challenges", “Disinformation Campaigns and Authoritarian Regimes”, “Understanding Security Dynamics in the Middle East” and “Climate Crisis and Security”. Another highlight? The final discussion at Berlin’s City Hall, where participants presented their insights directly to high-ranking experts and former policymakers Annegret Kramp-Karrenbauer, Martin Sklenar and Sascha Spoun. What made this conference special was the diversity of perspectives in the room—students, young professionals, experts and activists, all bringing their unique experiences and aspirations to the table. We are convinced that security policy should reflect the concerns and ideas of those who will live with its consequences for the longest time. Timing matters: two weeks after the Munich Security Conference and amid transatlantic political shifts, over 200 🦸♂️🦸♀️ young minds from 31🌍 countries came together to Berlin for our long awaited first ✨🇪🇺Young European Security Conference. Over two days, they tackled the most pressing global security issues in 8 working groups and panels - ranging from Democracy & Resilience, Technology, Climate and Economy to key geopolitical regions of Ukraine and Eastern Europe, Africa and Asia plus - of course - Transatlantic Relations. Guided by 30 renowned experts from leading international think tanks, a unique and much needed space for exchange on security policies emerged here for young Europeans (16-24yo). The whole programme of the YESC goes well beyond this event, organising smaller youth events aroung Europe within the network of the European Youth Parliament (EYP) and working even on educational materials for school courses within the Understanding Europe Network.   We will continue to build on this new initiative and are open for new networks and supporters. Because now is the time. 🇪🇺💪🧠 A huge thank you to our incredible partners from the Gemeinnützige Hertie-Stiftung, who enabled this new project and brought even in their networks like Jugend debattiert, and the Centre for International Security, whose students ensured a seamless experience from start to finish. Morgen und übermorgen werden in Berlin gut 200 junge Europäer aus mehr als 30 Ländern zwei Tage lang über europäische Sicherheitspolitik diskutieren. Bei der ersten Young European Security Conference in der Urania und im Roten Rathaus! Warum? Weil die großen geostrategischen Debatten momentan in jeder Altersgruppe, in jedem Milieu und in jeder Region geführt werden müssen, damit wir uns für die Zukunft gut aufstellen. Ich freue mich darüber, dass die Gemeinnützige Hertie-Stiftung und die Schwarzkopf-Stiftung Junges Europa hieran mit dieser Konferenz mitwirken und dies mindestens drei Jahre lang fortsetzen werden - und darüber, dass ich morgen mit Tomáš Sacher, Schwarzkopf-Geschäftsführer und Partner in Crime, gemeinsam eröffnen darf. Das werden interessante Tage, unter anderem mit der ehemaligen Verteidigungsministerin Annegret Kramp-Karrenbauer, der Expertin für russische Desinformation Julia Smirnova vom Think Tank CEMAS, dem TV-Journalisten John Kantara, dem EU-Parlamentarier Tobias Cremer, der Hertie School Professorin Marina Henke und der außenpolitischen Sprecherin der grünen Bundestagsfraktion Deborah Düring. Junge Menschen aus unserem Netzwerk des European Youth Parliament (EYP) teilen ihre Gedanken anlässlich des dritten Jahrestages des völkerrechtwidrigen Angriffskrieges gegen die Ukraine. Sie rufen auf zu Solidarität, breiter Unterstützung und konkreter Fürsprache aus Europa – besonders in Zeiten einer sich andeutenden sicherheitspolitischen Zeitenwende.

Die #Bundestagswahl steht vor der Tür. Während die politische Debatte aktuell vor allem auf Migrationspolitik und die Zusammenarbeit mit der AfD verengt wird, wächst die Unsicherheit vieler junger Menschen: Die steigenden #Lebenshaltungskosten, die #Klimakrise, #Inflation und soziale# Ungleichheit werfen Fragen auf, auf die die Politik Antworten finden muss.    Eine Studie der Universität Bielefeld aus dem Jahr 2024 zeigt, dass 78 Prozent der Jugendlichen das Gefühl haben, ihre Anliegen würden von Politiker*innen nicht ernst genug genommen. Mehr als die Hälfte kritisiert das mangelnde Engagement der Politik, gesellschaftliche Herausforderungen aktiv anzugehen. Doch welche Ideen und Strategien haben die Parteien, um die Zukunft junger Menschen zu gestalten?    Um diese Fragen zu diskutieren, haben wir führende Politiker:innen der demokratischen Parteien eingeladen. Mit dabei sind:  Lisa Paus, Bundesministerin für Familie, Senioren, Frauen und Jugend und Spitzenkandidatin von Bündnis 90/Die Grünen in Berlin  Ruppert Stüwe, Spitzenkandidat der SPD in Berlin  Paulin Nusser, Direktkandidatin der FDP für Treptow-Köpenick  Franziska Dezember, Direktkandidatin der CDU für Berlin-Pankow  Ggf. Weitere Vertreter*innen der demokratischen Parteien    Gemeinsam wollen wir übereinige der dringendsten politischen Themen sprechen: Wie wollen die Parteien die wirtschaftliche Zukunft junger Menschen sichern? Welche Konzepte gibt es für Bildung, Wohnen und soziale Gerechtigkeit? Welche Maßnahmen sind geplant, um der Klimakrise wirksam zu begegnen? 𝗦𝘁𝗿𝗲𝗻𝗴𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗬𝗼𝘂𝗻𝗴 𝗣𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗽𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗲𝘀 𝗼𝗻 𝗦𝗲𝗰𝘂𝗿𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝗣𝗼𝗹𝗶𝗰𝘆 With international conflicts, security concerns and policy issues becoming increasingly relevant, we are committed to empowering young people to engage with these critical matters. Our goal is to ensure that their perspectives, concerns, and questions are heard and valued. This is why we are very excited to launch a brand-new educational project in collaboration with Gemeinnützige Hertie-Stiftung: the 𝗬𝗼𝘂𝗻𝗴 𝗘𝘂𝗿𝗼𝗽𝗲𝗮𝗻 𝗦𝗲𝗰𝘂𝗿𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝗖𝗼𝗻𝗳𝗲𝗿𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲 #YESC. It will be running for three years and will take place annually in Berlin. The conference is accompanied by event and material development in our youth networks. How does security policy intersect with areas such as the economy, environment, technology, or democracy? Approximately 200 young people from across Europe will delve into these and many other important questions at #YESC2025, taking place from February 27 to 28 at Urania Berlin. Through working groups and discussion formats, participants will explore and develop their own approaches to topics like democratic resilience, climate security, artificial intelligence, and transatlantic relations. Interactive formats such as World Cafés, Fishbowl discussions, and an escape game will broaden the conference’s approach, fostering collaboration and innovative thinking. The conference will culminate in a closing session at Berlin’s City Hall (Rotes Rathaus), where participants will present their ideas and engage in meaningful dialogue with high-ranking experts. We are particularly happy that, alongside numerous experts from academia, civil society, and politics, young volunteers from our networks European Youth Parliament (EYP) and #UnderstandingEurope will facilitate the workshops with their peer-to-peer experience.
