We are excited to introduce the newest member of our BizDev team: Sean Henning! Sean joins us after working 15 years at the USDA Forest Service, first starting as a firefighter on a hotshot crew before becoming a GIS specialist. “Fire has always been a part of my career, from direct suppression on the ground to supporting teams with better data,” Sean says. “At every stage, it’s been about making sure firefighters have the best possible information to stay safe and be effective.” Sean first encountered OroraTech at a NASA - National Aeronautics and Space Administration-hosted conference, where he was struck by the company’s unique approach. “In a room full of presenters talking about what could be done, OroraTech stood out because they had a solution that was already operational,” Sean recalls. “They had satellites in space, collecting real-time data, and they could show how their platform was delivering insights right now.” That tangible impact is what convinced him that OroraTech was the right place to be. With his background in fire planning and decision support, Sean has spent years helping firefighters make strategic, data-driven choices in the field. “What kind of information would help these guys be more successful, be safer, and ultimately more effective?” he asks. “That’s what I want to bring to OroraTech—figuring out how we can provide better intelligence to support the people on the ground.” Sean sees OroraTech evolving into a powerful decision-support platform in the future, adding features that would be directly applicable to wildfire situations. “Right now, we’re great at fire detection and spread prediction, but I think we can go further—helping teams plan their response, identifying the best places to put fire lines, and improving communication between resources. As we launch more satellites, revisit rates improve, and we’ll get closer to constant situational awareness for firefighters.” #wildfire #wildfiretech #employee #employee

Data Engineering Lead @ OroraTech - Thermal Intelligence for a Sustainable Earth

I am happy to announce an important collaboration between the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts - ECMWF and OroraTech as part of this year's ECMWF Code for Earth programme. Our joint challenge, "FireFlux: FRP-based emission calibration from small satellite constellations," focuses on developing methodologies to estimate fire radiative power (FRP) and burning emissions from data recorded by our FOREST-2 satellite, with optional data from Fengyun-3E and Sentinel-3. FRP quantifies the measured radiant heat output of fires. By accurately estimating FRP, we can better assess the emissions from biomass burning, which is vital for improving air quality forecasting and understanding climate impacts. This challenge seeks contributors who are passionate about solving problems and developing algorithms that can help battle climate change. We need experts familiar with remote sensing and earth observation data who can translate innovative ideas into practical code solutions. Shoutout to the great team of mentors that will guide this challenge with me: Enza Di Tomaso, Mark P., Miha Razinger, Julia Gottfriedsen, Marc Seifert, and Max Bereczky. We just finished our 2025 U.S. Onsite with our newly formed U.S. Team in Denver, Colorado, for our growth into the United States! With leaders attending from across the company, we refined our key initiatives and strengthened the foundation of our mission: delivering real-time wildfire intelligence where it’s needed most. The U.S. is critical to our work – both as a wildfire-prone region and a global leader in fire management solutions. Expanding here means scaling our impact, deepening partnerships, and ensuring that decision-makers have the best possible tools to combat the growing wildfire crisis. A huge thank you to everyone who participated, Thomas Grübler, Martin Herkommer, Jay Stalnacker, Robert LaMacchia, Sean Henning, Steve Maisonet & Zach Ricklefs, our hosts Maureen Massidda & Samantha Seems (Tillner), and to our entire team for pushing this vision forward. Now let’s get to work. #Wildfiredetection #Wildfire #USA #Fireintelligence

🌍🔥 Major milestone for wildfire monitoring! We’re proud to share that OroraTech has partnered with Spire to develop a #wildfire detection satellite constellation for the Canadian Space Agency | Agence spatiale canadienne under a CAN$72 million contract. 🛰️ This system will monitor all active wildfires across Canada from space, enabling faster response times and protecting communities, ecosystems, and critical infrastructure. Why it matters 🔥 Canada spends over CAN$1 billion annually battling wildfires—while indirect costs from property damage, evacuations, health crises, and economic disruption in forestry, energy, and tourism are even higher. 🔥 Indigenous communities bear a disproportionate impact, making up 42% of wildfire-related evacuations, despite representing just 5% of Canada’s population. OroraTech’s thermal infrared technology and advanced data processing have already proven their impact during Canada’s worst wildfire seasons. Now, this mission takes wildfire management to the next level—setting a new standard for climate #resilience and disaster #response. 👏 Congratulations to Martin Langer, Thomas Grübler, Florian Mauracher, Axel Roenneke, Viktor Gauk, Rupert A., Marina Pott and the entire OroraTech team! Your work is transforming wildfire management—protecting people and nature on a global scale. 🌱🔥 Read more here 👉 https://lnkd.in/dq8D_dcG cc: Florian Erber, Felix Ferstl #ImpactInvesting #ClimateResilience #Wildfire #SpaceTech #MakeItMatter

We're closing critical gaps in wildfire monitoring. Last week, we shared an infographic about the Afternoon Gap – the blind spot in wildfire detection during late afternoons when fires peak. This week, we’re diving deeper into a detailed blog post. Public satellites leave this gap uncovered, but that’s where Fengyun-3E steps in. By adding exclusive afternoon and early morning passes, we’re boosting detection rates and delivering near-real-time insights when they matter most. And this is just the beginning. OTC-P1 and OTC-P2, our proprietary satellite constellations, are launching in March and November 2025, respectively. This will provide 24/7 coverage with unmatched speed and accuracy. Together, we’re transforming wildfire intelligence. Want to learn more? Check out our blog post, detailing what the Afternoon Gap actually is and how we plan to close it. https://lnkd.in/d8kHsdrY #WildfireDetection #SatelliteInnovation #OroraTech

Detecting and monitoring wildfires from space

Canada 🇨🇦 will be the next country to utilize a dedicated constellation of satellites for wildfire monitoring... And I'm very proud to announce that OroraTech will be delivering the payloads for this constellation. This is just another big step toward realizing a future where the whole world is protected by this cutting-edge technology, to improve how we respond to wildfires. It's time for the U.S. 🇺🇸 to follow suit. Link in the comments. #wildfire #wildfires #wildfiremanagement #wildfiresat #fireservice #earthobservation

Wildfires peak in intensity during the late afternoon – the exact time public satellites miss critical detections. This is called the “Afternoon Gap”. Here’s how we are closing it: Fengyun-3E has been integrated into Wildfire Solution and delivers wildfire detections during these underserved hours. This is laying the groundwork for our first plane, OTC-P1, launching in March of 2025. In 2025, OTC-P1 & OTC-P2 will eliminate the gap entirely with faster onboard processing, advanced thermal imaging, and consistent revisits. This satellite is part of the Active Fire Plus package, the most advanced wildfire detection solution to date. Fengyun-3E’s coverage currently spans high-risk wildfire regions, including Australia, Europe, and parts of Chile, the USA, and Argentina, and we are actively expanding that coverage.  More precise, faster wildfire detection. Because the sooner we act, the more we protect. #WildfireDetection #EarthObservation #Infographics #SpaceTech
