- Zeitgeist ist ein Dienstprogramm, welches die Aktivitäten eines Computernutzers und Ereignisse auf einem Computer aufzeichnet. Diese Aktivitäten und Ereignisse können z. B. das Öffnen einer Datei, der Besuch einer Webseite oder auch geführte Unterhaltungen mit Instant-Messaging-Programmen sein. Diese gesammelten Informationen macht Zeitgeist anderen Programmen in Form von Zeitverlaufsangaben und Statistiken verfügbar. Das Dienstprogramm ermöglicht es, Beziehungen zwischen den aufgezeichneten Objekten abzuleiten und Benutzungsmuster mit Hilfe von Computeralgorithmen wie „Winepi“ und „A priori“ zu ermitteln. Die Zeitgeist-Software ist die hauptsächliche Datenquelle für Programme wie und Ubuntu Unity, welche sich als Front-Ends zu Zeitgeist gerade zu wichtigen Verwaltungs- und Darstellungswerkzeugen von Aktivitäten in der GNOME-Desktopumgebung entwickeln. It makes this information readily available for other applications to use in the form of timelines and statistics. It is able to establish relationships between items based on similarity and usage patterns by applying data association algorithms such as "Winepi" and "Apriori". Zeitgeist is the main engine and logic behind GNOME Activity Journal which is currently seen to become one of the main means of viewing and managing activities in GNOME version 3.0. (en)
- Zeitgeist è un software libero che in background registra le attività degli utenti in un computer, dai file aperti ai siti visitati e alle conversazioni in chat: queste informazioni diventano disponibili per altre applicazioni per essere ricercate in ordine temporale, geografico e per generare delle statistiche. È capace di stabilire relazioni tra i vari dati basandosi sulla similarità e su determinati pattern applicando algoritmi di associazione dati come "" e "Apriori". Utilizzando algoritmi di apprendimento automatico, Zeitgeist può stabilire relazioni tra gli elementi in base alla somiglianza e ai modelli di utilizzo. È possibile estrarre i dati registrati dal servizio Zeitgeist via D-Bus. Zeitgeist ha la sua implementazione grafica di riferimento GNOME Activity Journal ed è usato anche dalla shell grafica Unity.
