- La Wielka Encyklopedia Powszechna PWN ( Grande Encyclopédie Universelle PWN ) était, jusqu'en 2005, la plus grande encyclopédie polonaise jamais écrite. Elle a été publié entre 1962 et 1970 par Państwowe Wydawnictwo Naukowe (Éditeurs scientifiques d'État, PWN) à Varsovie. La WEP contient environ 82 000 entrées, 12 000 illustrations en treize volumes (dont le supplément). De nombreuses entrées sont signées et beaucoup contiennent du matériel bibliographique. L'encyclopédie fait preuve d'une censure sévère. Comme indiqué dans la préface, l'encyclopédie est « basée sur des hypothèses rationalistes et matérialistes » et reflète la vision du monde de « l'idéologie socialiste ». Environ 2000 auteurs, 1000 critiques et près de 100 rédacteurs ont été supervisés par le conseil scientifique nommé par l'Académie polonaise des sciences (PAN) et le ministère de l'Enseignement supérieur, et dirigé par le professeur Tadeusz Kotarbiński. L'initiative d'écrire la WEP a été prise par PWN en juillet 1957 lorsqu'il a été décidé de publier une encyclopédie universelle en 8 volumes (plus tard étendue à 12 volumes). Les travaux préparatoires ont commencé en 1957 et l'écriture proprement dite a commencé en avril 1959. Il a fallu 14 mois pour préparer la liste des entrées, environ 16 mois pour rédiger le premier volume, puis environ 9 mois pour chaque volume suivant. Juste après la publication du douzième volume, les travaux sur le Supplément (environ cinq mille articles mis à jour, révisés ou entièrement nouveaux) ont commencé. (fr)
- The Wielka Encyklopedia Powszechna PWN (Great Universal Encyclopedia PWN) was, until 2005, the largest Polish encyclopedia ever written. It was published between 1962 and 1970 by Państwowe Wydawnictwo Naukowe (State Scientific Publishers, PWN) in Warsaw. The WEP contains about 82,000 entries, 12,000 illustrations, 200 color and 650 black-and-white inserted illustrations, and 120 color maps in thirteen volumes (including the Supplement). Many entries are signed, and many contain bibliographic material. The encyclopedia shows severe censorship. As is stated in the foreword, the encyclopedia is "based on rationalist and materialist assumptions" and reflects the worldview of the "socialist ideology". About 2000 authors, 1000 reviewers, and almost 100 editors were supervised by the Scientific Board appointed by the Polish Academy of Sciences (PAN) and the Ministry of Higher Education, and headed by Professor Tadeusz Kotarbiński. The initiative to write the WEP was taken by PWN in July 1957 when it was decided that an 8-volume (later expanded to 12 volumes) universal encyclopedia would be published. Preparations began in 1957 and the actual writing started in April 1959. It took 14 months to prepare the list of entries, about 16 months to write the first volume, and then about 9 months for each next volume. Right after the twelfth volume had been published, the work on the Supplement (about five thousand updated, revised or completely new articles) began. (en)
