- Singularity ist eine plattformübergreifende und quelloffene Software für die Virtualisierung auf Betriebssystemebene (Containervirtualisierung). Mit Singularity werden Container und ihre Reproduzierbarkeit insbesondere für den Bereich des Hochleistungsrechnens verfügbar gemacht. Hierbei ermöglicht Containervirtualisierung das einfache Kopieren und Verschieben einer Laufzeitumgebung samt ausführbaren Quellcodes in ein anderes System und stellt sicher, dass sich der Code in dieser Umgebung identisch zum Ursprungssystem verhält. Singularity erschien erstmals im Jahr 2016, der Quellcode ist auf github veröffentlicht. Das Projekt wird von Sylabs.io gepflegt.Führende Institute der Wissenschaft setzen Singularity ein, darunter Harvard University, Stanford University und das Fraunhofer-Institut für Techno- und Wirtschaftsmathematik. - Singularity est un programme informatique gratuit et open source qui effectue une virtualisation au niveau du système d'exploitation, également appelée conteneurisation. Il est similaire au logiciel Docker (logiciel). Singularity apporte une solution de conteneurisation permettant de la reproductibilité au calcul scientifique et au monde du calcul haute performance (HPC). Le besoin de reproductibilité nécessite la capacité de déplacer des applications d'un système à l'autre et pour cela l'utilisation des conteneurs est intéressante. Grâce aux conteneurs Singularity, les développeurs peuvent travailler dans des environnements reproductibles de leur choix et ces environnements complets peuvent facilement être copiés et exécutés sur d'autres plateformes. L'utilisateur peut par exemple créer un conteneur sur son ordinateur personnel et l'exécuter sur une grille de calcul haute performance. (fr)

One of the main uses of Singularity is to bring containers and reproducibility to scientific computing and the high-performance computing (HPC) world. The need for reproducibility requires the ability to use containers to move applications from system to system. Using Singularity containers, developers can work in reproducible environments of their choosing and design, and these complete environments can easily be copied and executed on other platforms.
