Osmanagić, né le 1er juin 1960 dans la région de Zenica, dans ce qui était la république socialiste de Yougoslavie (aujourd'hui la Bosnie-Herzégovine), est le propriétaire d'une usine de métallurgie à Houston, aux États-Unis, et le fondateur et président de la Bosnian Pyramid of the Sun Foundation. Fouilleur amateur, il a un doctorat en sciences sociales de l'université de Sarajevo portant sur la civilisation Maya. Il réside actuellement à Sarajevo (Bosnie-Herzégovine). Durant quinze ans, il a étudié les pyramides pré-colombiennes du Salvador, du Mexique et du Pérou. Il s'est déjà fait remarquer par la communauté scientifique internationale en invoquant les origines extraterrestres des pyramides mayas et soutient certaines des théories sur les propriétés des crânes de cristal. En 2005, le directeur du Musée de Visoko, Senad Hodovic, l'appelle pour étudier les pyramides bosniennes. Il crée parallèlement une association pour récolter des fonds pour ses recherches. He is best known for promoting his pseudo-archaeological project in central Bosnia (near the town of Visoko) related to the so-called "Bosnian pyramids". Osmanagić claims that a cluster of natural hills in central Bosnia and Herzegovina are the largest human-made ancient pyramids on Earth. He has conducted extensive marketing about the site and promoted tourism there. An enthusiast of pyramids, Osmanagić completed a doctorate in social sciences but does not have a science background in any archaeological field. Professional geologists, archaeologists and other scientists have directly refuted his claims about the central Bosnian hills; they have concluded – after direct analysis of the site, its known history, and excavations – that the hills are common natural formations known as flatirons with no signs of human construction.
