Auch im deutschen Sprachraum wird oft die Abkürzung PONV für das englische postoperative nausea and vomiting genutzt. Die Häufigkeit von Übelkeit oder Erbrechen liegt bei einer Allgemeinanästhesie ohne prophylaktische Maßnahmen bei 20 bis 30 Prozent. PONV entsteht durch verschiedene Faktoren (Medikamenteneinfluss, persönliche Veranlagung, äußere Einwirkungen), der Entstehungsmechanismus ist nicht im Detail verstanden. Es stehen mit übelkeitsmindernden Medikamenten (Antiemetika) und durch die Modifikation von Anästhesieverfahren effektive Maßnahmen zur Therapie und Prophylaxe zur Verfügung.
