- Phanom Rung (vollständiger Name Prasat Hin Khao Phanom Rung, Thai: ปราสาทหินเขาพนมรุ้ง, Aussprache: [praːsàːt hǐn kʰǎw pʰánom rúŋ], etwa: Palast aus Stein auf dem Berg Rung, dabei heißt Phnom Rung auf Khmer etwa „Breiter Berg“) ist ein Tempelbezirk auf einem erloschenen Vulkan im heutigen Thailand, etwa 50 Kilometer südlich der Provinzhauptstadt Buri Ram gelegen. Frühe Inschriften aus dem 7. oder 8. Jahrhundert deuten darauf hin, dass hier ein früher Tempel aus der Chenla-Periode stand. Im Wesentlichen stammt die Anlage aber aus dem 10. bis 12. Jahrhundert und ist der Angkor-Periode der Khmer-Kultur zuzuordnen. Der Ruinenkomplex von Phanom Rung, Prasat Mueang Tam und Plai Bat steht seit 2019 auf der Tentativliste für das UNESCO-Weltkulturerbe. (de)
- Khao Phnom Rung (thai: พนมรุ้ง, API : [pʰā.nōm rúŋ]) est le nom d'un volcan éteint depuis 900 000 ans, sur lequel fut érigé à partir du Xe siècle le temple Prasat Phnom Rung (thaï : ปราสาทพนมรุ้ง ; API : [praːsàːt hǐn kʰǎw pʰánom rúŋ]). Le Khao Phnom Rung se trouve au sud de la province de Buriram, dans l'amphoe Chaloem Phra Kiat, en Thaïlande, près de la frontière du Cambodge. C'est "le plus vaste et le mieux restauré des temples khmers de Thaïlande" (dixit le Lonely Planet). Quand le temple fut érigé au sommet du Khao Phnom Rung, des modifications ont été apportées au cratère pour le convertir en réservoir d’eau potable. Le nom sanskrit du temple était Mahidharapura, dont sont issus les ancêtres des rois khmers actuels. Phnom Rung était le nom original du volcan, mais aussi celui du temple depuis le XIe siècle, le nom apparaît, sur quatre inscriptions en alphabet khmer découvertes sur le Prasat Phnom Rung. Le nom Phnom Rung dérive du mot khmer Vnam Rung qui signifie montagne large, de même que les mots S-Thuadri et S-Thula Saila écrits au moyen d’autres alphabets khmer en sanskrit. Le Prasat Phnom Rung est un sanctuaire dédié à la secte Pasupata de l'hindouisme sivaïte. La construction au sommet du Khao Phnom Rung est comparée à la résidence du dieu Shiva sur le mont Kailash. - Phanom Rung (Thai: พนมรุ้ง, pronounced [pʰā.nōm rúŋ]), or full name, Prasat Hin Phanom Rung (Thai: ปราสาทหินพนมรุ้ง – Phanom Rung Stone Castle), is a Hindu Khmer Empire temple complex set on the rim of an extinct volcano at 402 metres (1,319 ft) elevation. It is located in Buriram Province in the Isan region of Thailand, and was built at a time when Khmer social-political influences were significant in Srisaket. It was built of sandstone and laterite between the 10th and 13th centuries. It was a Hindu shrine dedicated to Shiva, and symbolises Mount Kailash, his heavenly dwelling.The Phanom Rung sanctuary compound was constructed over several phases, dated by means of iconography of its art and architectural styles together with its inscriptions. These comprise two foundations of sacred brick buildings of 10th century C.E., the minor sanctuary of 11th century, the central sanctuary built by king Suryavarman II’s relative Narentratitaya in 12th century and two Bannalais (libraries) of the 13th century. Further sacred buildings built in the reign of King Jayavarman VII in 13th century, including the Royal attire Changing Pavilion, the Kudi Rishis of Nong Bua Ray, the medical centre or hospital (Arokayasala) and Prasat Ban Bu, a rest house with fire where travelers could shelter (Dharmasala) on the plain at the foot of Phanom Rung, alongside the road linking Angkor and Phimai. These evidence an important vice-regal centre on and around the mountain that flourishes from the 10th to the 13th centuries. Thailand's Department of Fine Arts and French experts spent 17 years restoring the complex to its original state from 1971 to 1988. On 21 May 1988, the park was officially opened by Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn. In 2005, the temple was submitted to UNESCO for consideration as a future World Heritage Site. (en)
