- The Painted Hills is a geologic site in Wheeler County, Oregon that is one of the three units of the John Day Fossil Beds National Monument along with Sheep Rock and Clarno. It totals 3,132 acres (12.67 km2) and is located 9 miles (14 km) northwest of Mitchell, Oregon. The Painted Hills are listed as one of the Seven Wonders of Oregon. The layers of color for which the site is named can be traced back to cycling periods of wet and dry climate conditions associated with the transition from the Eocene epoch to the cooler, more temperate Oligocene epoch. The different layers of colors are due to the soil being composed of a combination of mudstone, siltstone, shale and lignite. (en)

Ces collines forment l'une des trois unités de la John Day Fossil Beds National Monument. Elles s'étendent sur 12,67 km2 et sont répertoriées comme l'une des sept merveilles de l'Oregon. Elles tirent leur nom des couches colorées qui correspondent à diverses époques géologiques. Le sol noir est constitué de lignite qui provient de la matière végétale qui poussait le long de l'ancienne plaine inondable. La coloration grise est du mudstone, du siltstone et du shale tandis que la coloration rouge est de la latérite formée par les gisements de la plaine inondable quand la région était chaude et humide. Название происходит от множества разноцветных геологических слоёв, прорезающих местные горы. Геологический срез стал наблюдаем благодаря некогда протекавшей здесь древней реке. Чёрные слои представляют собой бурый уголь, образованный древними растениями, росшими на берегах реки. Серый цвет дают аргиллит, алевролит и глинистый сланец.Красный цвет имеет латерит, образованный донными речными осадками, когда территория была влажной и тёплой.
