- Mata-kantiga (from old Portuguese, literally meaning, “kill the song”) is a Malay genre of music of Portuguese origin, very similar to other Portuguese folk music, like the (Portugal), to Repente, and Trova (Brazil). Cultivated mainly in the area of Malacca (in Malaysia), it's a type of song where a man and a woman change improvised verses, divided generally in three types: romantic (cantigas de amigo, Portuguese for "songs of friendship"), mock (cantigas de mal dizer, Portuguese for "songs of ill-saying") and miscellaneous. In the old days, some couples participated in sung duels and each partner used different verses mata-kantiga to seduce or to mock the other while the remaining hearing audience danced another sort of Malay music, also of Portuguese origin, called Branyo. Mata-kantiga was accompanied by the violin, rebana (small tambourine) and drum (of double face, Portuguese style). Currently in disuse, its last great exponent was the singer and poet , deceased in 1986. A very similar sort of music genre, also of Portuguese influence and from the same region, called Dondang Sayang predominates nowadays. (en)
- Mata-kantiga (literalmente, "matar a canção") é um gênero de música malaia de origem portuguesa, muito semelhante à Desgarrada (Portugal), ao Repente, ao Cururu e à Trova (Brasil). Cultivada principalmente na área de Malaca, é cantiga ao desafio, onde um homem e uma mulher trocam versos improvisados, divididos geralmente em três tipos: românticos (cantigas de amigo), escárnio (cantigas de mal-dizer) e miscelâneas (cantigas indiferentes). Antigamente vários casais participavam em duelos cantados e cada parceiro utilizava diferentes versos mata-kantiga para seduzir ou escarnecer o outro enquanto a restante audiência dançava outro gênero de música malaia, também de origem portuguesa, denominada branyo. Acompanhava-se a cantoria com violino, rebana (pandeirinho) e tambor (de dupla face, de estilo português). Atualmente em desuso, seu último grande expoente foi a cantora e poeta Rosil de Costa, falecida na década de 80 do século XX. Um gênero muito similar, também de influência portuguesa e da mesma região, denominado dondong sayang predomina hoje em dia. (pt)
