- Der M1 motorway (englisch für ‚Autobahn M1‘) verbindet die beiden größten Städte Irlands, die irische Hauptstadt Dublin und Belfast, die Hauptstadt Nordirlands. Die Autobahn ist 72 km lang; ihr letztes Teilstück von 16,3 km wurde am 27. Juni 2003 eröffnet. Der Ausbau der alten N1 auf den Standard einer modernen Autobahn hat ca. 700 Millionen Euro gekostet. Die Europäische Union hat sich mit 270 Millionen Euro an den Baukosten beteiligt. Das Verkehrsaufkommen liegt bei bis zu 68.000 Fahrzeugen am Tag auf der Umgehung des Dubliner Flughafens. Der Ausbau zur Autobahn war nicht nur nötig, um den Verkehrsfluss aufrechtzuerhalten. Es kam auf der N1 auch zu vielen Unfällen zwischen Kraftfahrzeugen, Fußgängern und Radfahrern, welche sich durch die Entzerrung der Verkehrssituation nun seltener ereignen. - The M1 motorway (Irish: Mótarbhealach M1) is a motorway in Ireland. It forms the large majority of the N1 national primary road connecting Dublin towards Belfast along the east of the island of Ireland. The route heads north via Swords, Drogheda and Dundalk to the Northern Irish border just south of Newry in County Armagh, where it joins the A1 road and further on, the M1 motorway in Northern Ireland. Długość trasy (Dublin – granica z Irlandią Północną) wraz z fragmentem oznaczonym jako droga ekspresowa wynosi 88,5 km. Trasa biegnie przez obszar trzech hrabstw: Dublin, Meath i Louth, będąc fragmentem międzynarodowej trasy E1. Przebudowa drogi do parametrów autostrady kosztowała około 700 mln €, z czego 270 milionów dała Unia Europejska. Dzienne natężenie ruchu w rejonie Dublina wynosi do 68 tys. pojazdów. Poprawa płynności ruchu nie jest jedyną przyczyną modernizacji trasy – dochodziło do wielu wypadków, w których poza pojazdami brali także udział piesi i rowerzyści. Odcinek od węzła Carlingford do granicy z Irlandią Północną oznaczony jest jako droga ekspresowa w ciągu . (pl)
