Previamente dos capítulos de la novela fueron publicados como relatos en la revista estadounidense The Magazine of Fantasy & Science Fiction en 1967. Fue publicada por primera vez en español en 1979 por Ediciones Minotauro con traducción de Carlos Gardini. El contexto de la novela –caracteres occidentales modernos en un mundo Hindú-budista– aparece reflejado ya en las primeras líneas del libro: Sus seguidores le llamaban Mahasamatman y decían que era un dios. - Lord of Light (1967) is a science fantasy novel by American author Roger Zelazny. It was awarded the 1968 Hugo Award for Best Novel, and nominated for a Nebula Award in the same category. Two chapters from the novel were published as novelettes in the Magazine of Fantasy and Science Fiction – "Dawn" in April 1967, and "Death and the Executioner" in June 1967. Zelazny noted that Lord of Light was written so that it could be taken as a science fiction or a fantasy novel. On the one hand, I attempted to provide some justifications for what went on in the way of the bizarre; on the other, I employed a style I associate with fantasy in the telling of the story. I wrote it that way on purpose, leaving some intentional ambiguity, because I wanted it to lie somewhat between both camps and not entirely in either. I did this because I did not see much stuff being written at that time which fit that description; because I wanted to see whether I could do it; and because I was curious as to how such a book would be received. The context of the novel – modern western characters in a Hindu-Buddhist-influenced world – is reflected in the book's opening lines: His followers called him Mahasamatman and said he was a god. He preferred to drop the Maha- and the -atman, however, and called himself Sam. He never claimed to be a god, but then he never claimed not to be a god. (en)

Un progetto di adattamento cinematografico del romanzo, poi non concretizzatosi, divenne celebre per essere stato utilizzato dalla CIA come copertura per l'operazione di esfiltrazione di alcuni diplomatici statunitensi da Teheran durante la crisi degli ostaggi in Iran nel 1981. Twee hoofdstukken waren al in 1967 te lezen in . De Nederlandse versie werd in 1972 uitgegeven door Uitgeverij Het Spectrum in de Prisma Pocketsreeks onder catalogusnummer 1537 tegen een kostprijs van 4 gulden. Een tweede druk volgde in 1974. Het verhaal is een kruising tussen sciencefiction, godsdienst en mythologie. Er vindt een godenstrijd binnen oude en nieuwe stromingen binnen het Boeddhistische/Hindoeïstische universum plaats. Zelazny citeert in elk van de negen hoofdstukken uit Boeddhistische en Hindoeïstische werken zoals Dhammapada en Brihadaranyaka Upanishad. De ontvangst in Nederland was matig; men herkende een goede schrijfstijl, maar zijn hang naar religie en mythologie werd niet echt op prijs gesteld, aldus De Volkskrant in 1972. Het verhinderde een twee druk niet. In de Verenigde Staten werd het als beste roman genomineerd voor zowel de Hugo Award (beste roman) als Nebula Award. (nl)
