- Daniel Ludwig Ernst Betche (31 de desembre de 1851, a Potsdam – 28 de juny de 1913, a Sydney) va ser un botànic alemany-australià. Va estudiar a college botànic de Potsdam i després als jardins municipals de Berlín. El 1874 va treballar com jardiner als vivers de Louis van Houtte a Gant. Cap a la dècada de 1980 visità Samoa, Tonga, les Illes Marshall i les Illes Carolines. Una part de la seva recerca va anar a parar a Leipzig i la resta al botànic Ferdinand von Mueller. El setembre de 1881 va ser contractat com recol·lector dels Jardins Botànics de New South Wales. Al març de 1897, va esdevenir ajudant de botànica de Joseph Maiden. En 1880 hace una expedición a Samoa; y se dirige a Sídney en 1881, donde se emplea como recolector del Museo de Ciencias Naturales, hasta 1897, y luego es Asistente Botánico de la misma institución. A pesar de su delicada constitución, fue un esforzadísimo investigador de la flora australiana. Publicó artículos sobre las islas Marshall, y con Joseph H. - Daniel Ludwig Ernst Betche (31 December 1851, in Potsdam – 28 June 1913, in Sydney) was a German-Australian horticulturist and botanist. His mother died at his birth and he was of delicate constitution all his life. His father was sufficiently well off to send him to winter in the warmer climate of Italy. He attended horticultural college in Potsdam and later worked at the municipal gardens in Berlin. In 1874 he began work as a gardener in the nursery of Louis van Houtte in Ghent. Around 1880, he visited Samoa, Tonga, the Marshall and Caroline Islands. From his travels in the South Seas, he issued two papers on flora native to the islands. Ferns collected in the islands were shipped to the University of Leipzig, and the rest of the specimens were given to botanist Ferdinand von Mueller. In September 1881 he was hired as a collector at the Sydney Botanical Gardens in New South Wales. In March 1897, he became a botanical assistant to Joseph Maiden. In Australia, he distinguished himself in the field of botanical systematics. The botanical genus Betchea (family Cunoniaceae) was named in his honor by Rudolf Schlechter. (en)
